Violence is also down slightly, but that could be because over 1200 thugs have been arrested. Locking up terrorists usually does stop them from, well, terrorizing. What the French are going to do with those thugs once things calm down is another story.
Even more interesting is the characterization by Chirac of the Islamists attacking the French infrastructure (they’re also now attacking hospitals) as “delinquents.”
Interior Minister Sarkozy, in the meantime, notes:
“We will monitor, bit by bit, the evolution of events,” AP quoted him as saying. “For a period of 12 days, raids will be possible every time that we have a suspicion of a stockpiling of weapons.”
Hmmm, considering these are supposed to be “diassfected youths” and “delinquents,” stockpiling weapons seems to be a rather grown-up, organized terrorist thing to do.

One thing that’s particularly sick about all this is that Chirac attempted to stay on the sidelines so the public would blame Sarkozy, who is a likely future presidential candidate and just about the best France can do in the foreseeable future in terms of a leader who might actually attempt and be able break them out from at least some of their old modes of thinking. I wouldn’t go so far as to call “Sarko” the potential French version of Margaret Thatcher, but he’s a hell of a lot closer to that than Chirac is!

I deal with “delinquents” regularly in my line of work and, what many might term, “disaffected youths”. I don’t recall us dealing with too many weapons stockpiles.
Hmmmmm? Maybe we are just reading too much into it? We may just be too black and white in our analysis. ;-)
