Zarqawi Update: Iraqi Minister Thinks He’s Dead, U.S. Military Thinks ‘Just Missed Him’

The story is still developing and there’s no definitive word, but here’s the latest. This follows comments from the White House last night that also shed doubts on whether or not the butcher was killed in the raid.

Via MSNBC:

Iraq’s foreign minister said Monday that terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi might have been killed in a gunfight with U.S. forces over the weekend, but U.S. military sources told NBC News that’s probably not the case and that troops likely “just missed” capturing him.

“American and Iraqi forces are investigating the possibility that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s corpse is among the bodies of some terrorists who died in the special military operation in Mosul,” Hoshyar Zebari told Jordan’s official Petra news agency during a visit to Moscow.

I’m not ready to give up, but if he did get away, perhaps his family will be true to their word and kill him for us. But evading 130,000 troops on the ground takes support of a team of people. The Amman bombing has worn away a great deal of that support, so I think it’s safe to say his time is limited.

Well, I hope after he’s taken care of, we can start hearing more about Osama. There seems to be very little of him in the news any more.

“Zarqawi: the New Face of al Qaeda” is a fasincating read. I couldn’t put it down when I got it several months ago. Written by Jean-Charles Brisard, one of the chief investigators for a 9/11 lawsuit. Brisard and his homies went to the Middle East and spoke to Zarqawi’s childhood classmates, bosses, cousins, family, prison mates etc.

What emerges is a mesmerizing portrait of a serial killer who ‘got religion.’ (Also interesting- Z is known as “The green man” b/c he’s covered in tattoos. He also used to hang out in the moonscaped cemetery across the street from his home. Creepy.)
