No Bond Girl for New James

CraigasBond.jpg

Daniel Craig as James Bond

While I think Daniel Craig is a good choice as the new James Bond, I'm not surprised they're having trouble casting the Bond Girl for the remake of Casino Royale. And the women who are rumored to be under consideration, well, they don't shake my Martini.

Thandie Newton? Rachel McAdams? (Who? And more importantly, Why??)

Natalie Portman is an idea, but would she do it? Or how about someone who isn't an ingenue and already established, like Charlize Theron. These days I don't even know who to suggest.

Nominations please :)

UPDATE 2/2:

Speaking of James Bond, the director of "Die Another Day" was apparently doing something Bond would never have. But then again, James likes taking dresses off, not putting them on.

That totally lame E!-Online site didn't even mention Diana Rigg! How dare they! Heck, slap some makeup on her and bring her back as the new Bond babe. My other favorite female in a Bond flick was Lottie Lenya, who played Rosa Kleb, head of Smersh, in From Russia With Love. Definitely not a babe, but a real neat actor.

Given that Casino Royale should take place mostly on the Riviera in and out of the casinos, an older, dignified yet stunning woman would be the ticket. You need a woman who would look like she belongs at an upscale casino as a patron and not paid-for arm candy.

Jennifer Beals would be fantastic. Phoebe Cates wouldn't be a bad choice either (and her kids are old enough, it's about time she start acting again, this would be a great re-introduction). If they wanted a European woman then Victoria Abril would be an excellent choice.

Having the 'Bond Girl' be older than the current Bond would be a nice change of pace, signal a change in the sexual politics of the role, and be more watchable than another man well past 40 slobber over a girl barely in her 20s. (much better to have a woman in her 40s slobber over a man in his 30s)

Barring that, I think this blog's proprietress could handle the job well. It'd be interesting casting to say the least.

Working off of XWL's suggestion of an older woman, I'd nominate Angelica Huston. She seems to have a certain level of elegance. Then again if it were left up to me on who the next Bond should have been I would have brought back Sean Connery. However, I suppose there wouldn't be much interest in Bond: Over The Hill.

I'll go with Ms. Portman. . . as soon as her hair grows back.

Posted by: Airdale at February 2, 2006 10:07 AM

Hmm...older...dignified...not one suggetion of Bea Arthur?

I think I'm still partial to Jane Seymore in "Live and Let Die". That was the first Bond film I'd ever seen as "new". The whole 'innocent sexuality' thing...yeah.

Posted by: PeteRFNY at February 2, 2006 11:31 AM

Scarlett Johanson, who is probably mentioned for everything. Emile de Ravin (Lost), Kristana Loken (Terminator 3). If you want brunette, Sofia Vergara, Rosalyn Sanchez, Paz Vega or Josie Maran. Everyone will hate me for mentioning Michelle Rodriguez, but anyway... And last but not least, Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai. She is smokin' hot!

Posted by: Prah Qwan at February 2, 2006 03:25 PM

Emily Procter. Yes, I know she's a TV actress -- probably hasn't done any movies (I must admit I didn't check). But her "thermometer quotient" is VERY high!

Posted by: BigDana at February 2, 2006 07:20 PM

Rachel McAdams or Naomi Watts would make a fine bond girl.

Posted by: PaxAmericana at February 2, 2006 09:46 PM

Rachel McAdams is the new IT girl. Trust me, she's going to get huge soon. Look how ga-ga everybody is over Rachael Ray. Rachel McAdams looks like her sister.

Posted by: mBasil at February 2, 2006 09:47 PM

This should be a no-brainer! The next Bond babe should be Keira Knightley. She was fantastic in Bend it Like Beckham yet has the chops to turn on the sophistication necessary for playing a role opposite Bond...

Posted by: cowgirlup at February 2, 2006 11:46 PM

My vote goes to Rachel Weisz.

Posted by: Steverino at February 3, 2006 05:49 AM

Kiera Knightley is too skinny! A Bond girl should have some meat on her bones

Posted by: beautifulatrocities at February 3, 2006 10:55 AM

***Kiera Knightley is too skinny! A Bond girl should have some meat on her bones.***

AMEN TO THAT!!! I like Liv Tyler. I think she could pull of being a decent Bond Girl. But really now, no one will ever beat Ursula Andress!!

Posted by: LesbianNeoCon at February 3, 2006 11:04 AM

If you like Diana Rigg, then you MUST check out her daughter Rachael Stirling, who is also an actress. In my opinion, she's one of the most beautiful women ever!

Posted by: Zavy at February 3, 2006 05:35 PM

Catherine Zeta Jones could pull it off too
