Hal

I first reported about Hal’s adventure in NY Central Park in the Sadie & Sydney blog. This was the coyote who somehow found his way to Central park, and after along chase was captured. As they were tagging him for release back into the wild the tragedy happened.

Hal, the Central Park Coyote, Dies

ALBANY, N.Y. – Hal, the coyote who paid a visit to New York City and was captured as he loped around Central Park, died as he was being tagged for release in the wild, a state official said Friday.

The coyote stopped breathing Thursday night during the routine tagging procedure and biologists could not revive him, said Gabrielle DeMarco, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Pathologists were trying to determine whether the stress of his capture or captivity or something else contributed to the death of the year-old, 35-pound coyote. [...]

I hope they do an autopsy so we can find out what happened. Perhaps it was the stress, or maybe he separated from his pack in the first place because he was sick. Hal had become one of Sydney’s heroes. Let’s all send good vibes for his little coyote soul.

Look at those eyes! Coyote’s are vicious, cunning killers. And that includes cats and DOGS! I’m sick of idiots feeding them near where I live and walk my dog. (A public park on a rim of a canyon)

Gee Warthog, cats and dogs too?
But you’re right about Coyotes. I don’t hate them for it though, that’s how God made them. We have to kill them around here because there are too many. (Open season, year round) My poor Aunt heard a pack of them killing a dog one night. She said it was the worst thing she ever heard. I’m from an area surrounded by a national park as well. The environmental activists got the government to re-introduce them into the Park. It’s nothing but trouble. I blame those idiots, not the coyotes!

But I still feel so bad for poor Hal. Maybe some moron in the city had kept him illegally as a pet then just dumped out in the park. The stress plus the tranquilizer probably killed him. It’s sad all the way around.

Coyote’s are killers OF cats and dogs! The ones near my home are losing their fear of humans because people are feeding them. Bad idea for both coyote’s and the people who have to put them down when they become dangerous.

What is happing in my ‘Town’ is everyone ‘wants a home with a view’ so homes & apt. are being built on all our beautiful hills. Now the people are wonder what is happing to ‘Fluffy’…they have to ‘stolen’. NO your living on the coyotes home & all the wildlife is being driven out, so they are looking for food, coming down from the hills at Dusk. I went to a meeting with the ‘head’ of our shelter, to talk to these new owners, no matter what we said, they still believe, ‘Fluffy’ is being ‘stolden’ & believe all thes coyotes ‘should be shot’. So who really is in the ‘right’ the homeowners, the builder, or the coyotes, who have lost their homes, cause of ‘Greed’. As I see more & more building going on in my town, I shed a tear,my Son points out places he would ‘mud womp’ on his bike, it reminds me of an old song, something about ‘tickie tackie houses’, Its sad, I wish I could afford to move, but I live in So. Calif, has anyone looked at the house prices?? Who can afford ‘these’ houses anyway? My pets stay in,I bring my Tortises in at night, when I had 2 smaller dogs, i ‘Dabble Mini Doxie’ she was ‘dumped’ cause she had so many ‘Mammery Tumors’ she couldn’t be breed anymore, so she was uless, my ‘Scottie’ was a Christmas present, that made his way to the shelter 3 days after, I would stand outside with them at night, they both died this yr. the doxie from her Cancer, my ‘Scottie’ cause of an infection he contracted from the fires. So soon we can count on only seeing coyotes in ‘Zoos’ with the other Animals we took from this earth. BUT come in my house & see ‘what a beautiful view I have!’ Yep I see bare hills, with no beautiful wildflowers, the small waterfalls, or the beautiful rock formations, gone also. I just love your ‘view’ of the carlights on the freeways, or your neighbors backyard.

    Hi Spence

I wouldn’t worry too much about the coyote as it certainly has made a comeback, as in ALL of the lower 48 states. This story makes the case. Even the wolf has made tremendous strides in its recovery, and we are talking about an animal that was intentionally eradicated from parts or most of this country (and there still could be an argument made.)

When you look at the last century it should be noted that in the beginning of that century there were many, many species on the brink of disaster. Wildlife was sparse, to put it lightly. Wildlife has made such an incredible turn-around, mostly due to regulated seasons brought on by the trapper and hunter. You certainly have made the case it’s solely not habitat.

It should also be noted animals have been coming and going for literally millions of years, so I don’t see man-kind bringing it to a screeching halt. It’s nature’s way (is there a song in that?)

P.S. I forgot, I love to see coyotes in the wild, I just don’t like them yapping within 15-20 yards of me in the night. Kinda makes my hair stand up…
