Why India? Explaining the Bombay Bombings

I'm preparing to participate in the recording of this week's Pajamas Media Blog Week in Review podcast. One of the questions I'll be answering involves the train bombings in Bombay, now confirmed to be an Islamist terrorist action.

At Frontpage Magazine, Dr. Walid Phares has the analysis of the Indian situation, including the background of al-Qaida's long standing inclusion of Hindus among Jews and Christians as infidels to be hated and killed.

The Jihadist War Against India

Is this the beginning of the Jihadi war on India? Yes and no. Yes it is a jihadist war on India, but no, the trains’ bombings weren’t the beginning of that war. Unlike the U.S., Spain, and the UK, the Indians have been subjected to small explosions of the holy war for years. Yesterday’s bombings of Mumbai’s trains (previously Bombay) are not the first strikes on Indian mainland. In October 2005, terror bombings killed more than 60 people in the Indian capital of Delhi. Mumbai itself was the target of terror attacks that massacred 55 persons and injured 180 in August 2003. And in December 2001, jihadist groups launched raids on India’s parliament killed a number of people, as well. The targeting of the most populous democracy on earth has been taking place for years, even before 9/11 at the hands of followers of a Salafi-Tablighi ideology, with common roots with al-Qaeda’s terrorist doctrine. The July 11 blasts in Mumbai aiming at innocent civilians are the last in a string of crimes directed against the Indian population by militants following orders and engaged in an irreversible path of violence. But who did it and why?

Every day there is more and more evidence that the evil visited upon us on September 11th is indeed part of a worldwide jihad. Ours is indeed a world war against Radical Islam, which views everyone who does not subscribe to the Wahhabist doctrine as infidel. As the people of India are well aware, they have been targets of Islamist terrorists since before 2001, and remain a high priority for death by the al-Qaida Islamist death cult and its agents.

My take on the Mumbai bombings is that al-Qaida is seeking to get the biggest bang for their buck. In this case they are hoping for a war between Pakistan and India (both nuclear powers). If you notice no one (al-Qaida) was quick to take credit for the bombings because they were hoping India would blame Pakistan. In the Spain bombings and London bombings they were seeking to get Spain and England out of Iraq (they succeeded with respect to Spain). Al-Qaida wants war in the Middle East (so does Iran) so that is also behind the recent attacks on Israel by the terrorists. They want to provoke a war and drag the US into it so they can attack moderate governments in the Middle East and continue the Jihad. That is why the US should be very careful in picking a fight. The fight should be on our terms, at our time, and our chosen battlefield.

Tammy, I agree with you. This war on Islamic terrorism is really WW4 in my opinion (WW3 being the war against Communism). The attack in India demonstrates that the Muslim faith doesn't care if you're Christian, Jewish, or Hindu. You're simply an infidel. In a way it's strange to see Hinduism lumped in with the other 2 as a common enemy.

SteveOK makes some great points too. I think that Bush is indeed determining on what terms we fight. To me his silence on asking Israel to stop the attacks is a huge shift from past policy of publicly calling on Israel to halt the agression.

If you ask me, letting Israel take care of business is a shot across the bow of Iran and Syria.
