Condi, Too, Insists Everything is Great

In today's Washington Post Secretary of State Rice has an article explaining for all us rubes exactly how great UN Resolution 1701 really is, how Hez lost the war, and why, Syria and Iran are on the outs. The Lady doth protest too much, methinks.

But with an imagination like hers, I'm surprised she didn't include the part about the Yellow Brick Road, two ruby glass slippers, and if we all just wish hard enough, the roads will be paved with candy.

Here are significant part of her piece, as she explains what is supposedly accomplished with 1701 (the full text of which is here), along with my questions and comments in brackets and bold.

A Path To Lasting Peace

[First a note about the title. Exactly how does one have a "lasting peace" when the deal allows a worldwide terrorist group to remain intact, operational, and successful in its own defense? Hmm?]

First, it puts in place a full cessation of hostilities. We also insisted on the unconditional release of the abducted Israeli soldiers [This is especially pathetic and misleading. We may have insisted, and they are mentioned in the preamble if you will, but the release of the soldiers is not an operation part of 1701]. Hezbollah must immediately cease its attacks on Israel, and Israel must halt its offensive military operations in Lebanon, while reserving the right of any sovereign state to defend itself [Or else what? The UN will give Hez the head shake? 1701 is not backed up by Chapter 7, which is the only thing that allows the UN to use force to enforce its own resolutions. We couldn't even manage to get that in]. This agreement went into effect on Monday, after the Israeli and Lebanese cabinets agreed to its conditions. [Hmm, last time I checked this wasn't a conflict between Lebanon and Israel. Oh yeah, that's right, all this happened without dealing with any of the terrorist attackers--Hez, Syria and Iran. Secretary Rice, via the UN, has essentially set up one of those tea parties little girls have with invisible, pretend guests.]

Second, this resolution will help the democratic government of Lebanon expand its sovereign authority [Expand its sovereign authority? Hez is part of its cabinet. Considering the comments of its PM praising Hez during the war, Syria still controls the government, and after 1701 was passed the parliament couldn't even maintain a meeting about disarming Hez]. The international community is imposing an embargo on all weapons heading into Lebanon without the government's consent [Really? Madame Secretary, when did the arming nations, Syria and Iran, agree to this? Oh, yeah they weren't part of the agreement. But at least we know Sweden and New Zealand and Poland won't be sending any missiles to Hez. Whew, thank goodness that's solved]. We are also enhancing UNIFIL, the current U.N. force in Lebanon. The new UNIFIL will have a robust mandate, better equipment and as many as 15,000 soldiers -- a sevenfold increase from its current strength [Wow, that sounds great. I'm confused, though. How is it that more UN troops will somehow be a good thing? UNIFIL allowed Hez to rearm, rebuild and dig in for 6 years. Looks like more UN troops will allow more of nothing to be done. Great work]. Together with this new international force [with French and German troops "guarding" Jews. What could go wrong?], the Lebanese Armed Forces will deploy to the south of the country to protect the Lebanese people [From whom? Themselves? Muslims who live in the south traditionally support Hez, which is why they live in the south. Oh, and that Lebanese army is also Muslim and Shiite, just like Hez. Another feather in everyone's cap] and prevent armed groups such as Hezbollah from destabilizing the area [that's just laughable]. As this deployment occurs, Israel will withdraw behind the "Blue Line" and a permanent cease-fire will take hold.

[...]

The implementation of Resolution 1701 will not only benefit Lebanon and Israel; it also has important regional implications. Simply put: This is a victory for all who are committed to moderation and democracy in the Middle East [and who exactly would that be?]-- and a defeat for those who wish to undermine these principles with violence, particularly the governments of Syria and Iran. [This is simple asinine and clearly untrue. Syria, Iran and its gang Hez have been emboldened as the only Arab forces to attack Israel and arguably survive. As I noted in my earlier piece about Rice's failure, her insistence, like GWB's, that the bad guys lost, will never make it true].

While the entire world has spent the past month working for peace, the Syrian and Iranian regimes have sought to prolong and intensify the war that Hezbollah started [and we have done absolutely nothing about it]. The last time this happened, 10 years ago, the United States brokered a cease-fire between Israel and Syria. The game of diplomacy was played by others, over the heads of the Lebanese [and now we've done it ignoring the actual warmongers themselves More tea anyone?]. Now Syria no longer occupies Lebanon ([ah, yes they do, It's called "Hezbollah"], and the international community is helping the Lebanese government create the conditions of lasting peace -- full independence, complete sovereignty, effective democracy and a weakened Hezbollah with fewer opportunities [Fewer. That's terrific] to rearm and regroup. Once implemented, this will be a strategic setback for the Syrian and Iranian regimes [blah, blah, blah].

[...]

For our part, the United States is helping to lead relief efforts for the people of Lebanon [and now here we go back into social work for a nation that never bothered to not only disarm a terrorist group, but voted some of the savages into their own government] and we will fully support them as they rebuild their country. As a first step, we have increased our immediate humanitarian assistance to $50 million [let Iran and Syria spend 50 mil to rebuild the Lebanese infrastructure. let the Lebanese feel what it's like to have terrorist pig nations as their only friends. That 50 mil would be better spent funding an attack on Iran and Syria]. To secure the gains of peace, the Lebanese people must emerge from this conflict with more opportunities and greater prosperity.

There's more, read the whole thing, but read it as I have--with the critical eye it deserves. This sort of patronizing garbage should insult every single one of you. The speeches, actions and statements of both the president and Rice in the past few days also indicate quite strongly that they know they're in trouble with this situation. In other words, they know how bad it is and instead of working to fix it, they're spinning like tops trying to make it sound good.

And when it comes to aid to Islamic nations, it's worth noting a story breaking today about what happened to some of the money sent to Pakistan after their horrible earthquake.

British investigators believe some of the money raised to help victims of last year's earthquake in Pakistan may have been used to fund last week's alleged plot to blow up jetliners over the Atlantic.

But let's pour 50 mil into Lebanon, which is arguably under the control of Hez thugs. Read the whole thing, take note and remember.

Even our Dem pals could not have done better!

This is probably the biggest embarassment to America since the Bay of Pigs. Real or perceived, Israel is a country with America as it's main supporter. They waged this battle with restraint that resulted in their defeat. Love American Style.

The US provided scant support to our ally (like it or not) for this fight against our enemies. This was the fight to win. This was the battle to dish a devastating blow to Hez, Syria, and Iran. Rather, they scored a major victory against Isreal and America.

Heads need to roll in Isreal and America. Rice should be gone. We need to fight the war against these Islamo Nazis with the ruthlessness they fight it against us.

I don't want my 2 y/o son to have to grow up and fight this fight. Let's unleash precision atom bombs.

Uh, no Tammy, you don't get it.

You make the mistake of assuming that Rice actually believes that the Hezzies will hold their fire. They won't. She knows this. The woman has a 185 IQ. Nasrallah and the Iranians won't be able to help themselves. We're actually counting on this. Do you actually expect Rice to come out and say, "Well, gee, we had to give the Israelis a breather so they could elect a more competent Leadership from Likud and then, when the Hezbollah start the war up again, the IDF can go out and wax the Boy President!" Do you expect a Secretary of State to actually put our cards up like that in Public? Not even Bolton does that.

But that's the plan. Ahmadhi-Nejad needs another war to tie down the Israelis so he can get his bomb done. What he doesn't count on is the IDF taking out the Boy President and leaving Nasrallah out on the street with a tin cup. Olmert was an idiot by going into Lebanon and leaving the Syrians alone. He won't be around to make that mistake again.

Stop blaming Rice for the incompetence of the Olmert Government. You think that Rice is some sort of Free Agent who is out there acting on her own without Bush's consent? Come on, you're Tammy Bruce. Don't be stupid. Bush and Condi saw that Olmert was indecisive and didn't want to do what it took to win, so he sent Condi out in the second quarter to blow the whistle for halftime. And rightly so. We have enough problems right now without having to hold the hands of a feckless, Neville Chamberlain-esque Israeli Government that can't make up its mind.

Tammy, we're at halftime. The Iranians and Nasrallah will see to that. The IDF is making prodigious efforts to correct the shortcomings exposed by the ground campaign. There will be political recriminations in the Knesset and the Olmert Government will fall. Kadima will collapse as a party. It was always Sharon's creature, anyway. Likud will be swept to power and a war cabinet, probably led by Shaul Mofaz, former Chief of Staff, put into place (Netanyahu was Finance Minister and may have been responsible for some of the materials shortages among the Reservists, there's talk that he'll never be PM...).

The war will be renewed before the year is out. When it is, expect the IDF to come out smokin', and under a new Head Coach. But try to remember that Rice is a diplomat, and that she's doing her job for the President.

Some very valid points.

However, I don't think Hezbollah could have been 'defeated', even if Israel fought longer. Extremists willing to join the cause would just pour in from surrounding areas (especially amidst the growing - albiet backwards - hatred of Israel). Look at us in Iraq, how long have we been there? And still the suicide bombings and attacks continue on an almost daily basis.

With the Lebanon situation, I was happy Israel would now get the attention and support of the international community. But yes, you are right, the UN definitely needs to be able to back its resolutions with actions, or else it will lose its credibility. Though, didn't they come to that realization a short while back with the scrutiny it underwent?... for some reason I have been under the impression that we can count more on the UN now. For the sake of world peace and civilization as a whole, let's hope I'm right.

Hi Tammy
Excellent dissing. I, like many other Righties, have been smacking the sides of our heads and after much consternation have come to a very similiar concluding question as Trinity:"Where *is* our Bush administration?"

I think we are in another "Harriet Miers" moment here where the barn door already being opened it is time to get this horse (Condi) back *in* the barn. Or maybe we are laying the criticism in the wrong place being that she does act on the 'Bosses' requests. Rush has a favorite saying about 'following the money' and in this global world we live in today there is probably a lot of politcal cover that is being done.

We are still 'beholdin'' to the Saudi's for our oil and that is a whole nother subject, but so many will remember the hand in hand photo of 'W' and the Saudi Prince in Crawford.

This recent 'war' between Islamofacists and Israel certainly has bought much comment and for good reason: Israel could have beaten the ever loving fluids out of Hezbolah. Every 'ceasefire' in it's own was a absurdity in that they have NEVER ceased! Ceasefire to the Hezzies equates to "REarm and ReLoad". Period. And with the crazy man in Iran it also means unconditional chaos.

Condi may have won adoration from the right for who she is and how far she has come, but (to paraphrase a famous Dem quote) "Ms. Rice, you ain't no Churchill."

I have one word for the Islomo-tards: NETANYAHU.

Posted by: auspatriotman [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 16, 2006 08:16 AM

My opinion of Rice has fallen immensely the last few months. Her inexperience at negotiation shows. Her background is as a brilliant academic and policy wonk, not a tough negotiator. In fact, she is reported to have once said regarding her term as provost at Stanford "I don't do committees." If you can't do committees, you can't negotiate. She was rumoured to be a weak NSA, unable to get all the factions to play nice together, now that weakness is on public display.
