It's Not Joe Lieberman Who Lost

It's the Democrat party.

With Lieberman conceding defeat tonight, he confirmed he will run as an independent in the November election. His concession speech was anything but, thank goodness.

"Of course I am disappointed by the results, but I am not discouraged," Lieberman said..

"The old politics of partisan polarization won today," Lieberman said. "For the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand."

"Tomorrow morning our campaign will file the necessary petitions … so that we can continue this campaign for a new politics of unity and purpose."

Even after years of watching my party decline, I have refused to abandon it, even if it means remaining as an example of what being a Democrat used to mean, and the difference between Classical Liberal politics versus today's stink of leftist tripe. I would expect Joe to remain a Democrat, but a win for him on November as an Independent will mean this entire nation wins. All in all, the November election is shaping up to be even more important than we could have imagined.

There was good news tonight as well. Proving that not all Dems are Soros leftists, voters in Georgia handed Cynthia McKinney a well-deserved defeat. She was unworthy of the office and the good people of that district made it clear they've had enough.

Adios Cynthia. Don't let that door hit you with its cell phone on your way out.

And for the best political coverage, visit Pajamas Media and if you like your blogging with video (and who doesn't?) your best choice is Michelle Malkin's site, Hot Air.

You go Joe. Let the rank and file speak. The party machine has been showing us its true colors at least since the Mondale feasco (still need the gift of spelling).
As an educated member of the working class (BA in poly sci. NDT inspector in aero-space and petro-chemical industries) I tend to be lost at times for consistant representation. Libertarian, Republican, maybe. Democrat? Not as long as the kook fringe is influencing the party to the extent that it is.

I called myself a conservative Democrat for a long time. I realised that the people you would associate with would at best feal sorry for you being so lost and "not understanding how the world really is".
I have a family now and cannot allow these people to dominate our culture with the upbringing of a young girl to concern myself with. At that point you realise that the battle is too important to take a hopeless stand on principles.

I do admire you for taking the punches for us Tammy. I am Catholic and will pray to St. Jude for you.

My gosh, this is really something. The Domocratic party is destroying itself, we republicans don't have to lift a finger.

This is going to sound funny, but I actually was an independent years ago. I never liked to associate myself with one party or the other, because if I didn't like something about the candidate of a particular party, I didn't want to be tied to voting for him/her. But since the Clinton administration, I have migrated all the way to the right - not because I am a die hard republican, but to get far away from the left (I have traditional morals and values). Hmmmm, I guess this is the 'party polarization' I saw a reference to in one of the editorials.

Anyway, getting back to my first sentence, I'm not gloating as a Republican, I'm gloating as an American.

Gosh, I honestly didn't expect that to happen.

In a sense, it's almost a good thing. It brings a clarity to the situation, much like the election of Hamas brings to the Palestinians. We know the extremists are strong in the Democratic leadership, although they try to convince us they're the voice of the mainstream rather than the fringe. But the political human sacrifice of one of their own, one who just six years ago was selected as their second-in-command, boggles the mind. What horrible crime must Joe Lieberman have committed to fall so thoroughly and so rapidly, toppled by an unknown? Dare I hope that others will realize how insanely dogmatic the Democrat party line has become?

If Lieberman had squeaked through, as I had expected he would, then the struggle would be quickly forgotten. Now, he's going to have it out. The stakes are high. If the extreme Left can pull this off, then they'll be in complete control of the Democrat Party for the near- and mid-term. If Lieberman can hold the line, then there might be some subsequent revival of a sane wing of the Party.

A more general observation is that people of all parties often have the sense that the best people are not in control. Tammy has spoken at length about how and why the biggest kooks often rise to the top. But I don't know of any solution, other than the general urge to keep the government from growing. The bigger government gets, the more power the kooks have over us.

Tammy, I appreciate your remarks on the Dems. If the Dems had more people like Zell Miller and yourself, as well as Joe Lieberman, I would revert to being an independent. The anti-war crowd is just so negative in all its aspects.

Posted by: WK [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 8, 2006 10:56 PM

You say "Democrat Party." Democrats don't say "Democrat Party." Stop lying about your party affiliation.

[Oh, that's deep. You forgot to add, "Neener, neener, neener."--ed.]

The Democrats blew this one BIG TIME. And here's how:

1) They trade an experienced, well-liked Senator for an untested, unproven commodity. The only thing Ned Lamont had going for him was the fact he was anti-war.

2) Ned Lamont is a Soros-wing Democrat, which has proven NOT to be a winner in the big elections. Remember John Kerry was a Soros-wing Democrat.

3) Connecticut is predominently Independent. If everything falls along party line votes, Lieberman wins going away.

4) If the Republican in the Senate race drops out and throws his support behind Lieberman, Lieberman is a lock. Lamont can't fight a two-front war on the campaign trail.

5) The fringe left can claim to be kingmakers, but they haven't figured out how to appeal to an audience besides themselves. That doesn't translate into votes for them, especially given how they usually take dissent from their opinions.

6) The fringe left is motivated by hate, not by logic. That makes them vulnerable when it comes to creating a consistent and coherent political strategy. A smart campaign will play up Lamont's ties to the fringe and what they've said about Lieberman or anyone who disagrees with them.

On the McKinney race, she has only herself to blame. She really didn't seem to be engaged as much as she should have been, and this translated into missed public appearances and thuggery by her "staff." Combine this with her embarassing public displays in recent months, and you have a recipe for defeat.

What does this forbode for November? Not much. I don't see Democrats riding an anti-incumbant wave into both houses of Congress, nor do I see people considering Democrats to be an alternative to the Bush Administration's way of handling things. Sure, Democrats are cheering now, but their lack of a strategy that addresses what people actually want hinders them.

I am an unaffiliated voter who switched over to the Dem party in order to vote for Lieberman. There were 15,000 others in CT who did the exact same thing. Lieberman lost the election by fewer than 10,000 votes. Come November, I may be registered as a Dem, but I am STILL an Independent and will cast my vote(s) based on my independent views.

Lamont and the far left repulse me. And the vast majority of the country is closer to where we are. Let moveon.org and the kos-sacks pat themselves on the back today ... they think they "won." But as Lieberman said, we're at halftime and they may have a narrow lead, but this game is far from over.

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman loses but this "closet Republican" is no independent. His loss to Ned Lamont was a referendum on the Joseph Liebermann support for the Bush Iraq war. Now Liebermann says he plans to run as an independent in November. He also predicts that he would be returned to the Senate for a fourth term. This is the same Senator that predicted he would win the Democratic Primary, predicted he would be Vice President of the United States and predicted that we would find Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) in Iraq. Whatever!

This "closet Republican" lost the election because of his "blind faith" in Bush and his support of the Bush war in Iraq. End of story.

Candidly, I'm glad he lost. He was no Democrat and he is no independent. I hope other "closet Republicans" and other politicans both Democrat and Republican who support the Bush War in Iraq feel the wrath of the African-American voters in November.

If Ned Lamont is suddenly such a "playa", why are so many tv news programs and my newspaper showing only Joseph Lieberman's photo? Seems to me the real story is Mr. Lieberman. After reading some of Mr. Lamont's snarky comments about his victory, I only hope he flames out early à la Howard Dean.

Posted by: gd [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2006 12:08 PM

After reading Tourquemada, I mean Anonymous1, above, now I understand. The Liberal Inquisition has examined Lieberman and found the fatal signs of heresy and incipient demonism, marking him as a "closet Republican," morally debased, who thus needs to be driven from office.

Posted by: Ray Zacek [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2006 07:07 PM

First of all let me say I am a conservative Republican who would probably never vote for Lieberman but I, like a lot of Republicans, respect Joe for his character and commitment to America's defense against terrorism. The guy is a giant and shouldn't have been treated the way he was by the leftwing of the Demo Party. A Party that would dump a guy like Lieberman is in a sorry state of affairs. I think he has an excellent chance of winning the general election because the whole state of Connecticut will vote and not just a few leftwing Demos. (And finally I would make some comments about that GA Representative who lost her primary today but she is not worthy to be mentioned in the same breath with Lieberman; but thank God she lost).

Posted by: SteveOk [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2006 08:45 PM

I too am a conservative Republican. I was a Democrat until Jimmy Carter. Need I say more... I was active duty Air Force for 26 years. Even though I was stationed in Washington, DC, my home of record was Connecticut. I was registered to vote there, until I retired and had to establish residence in Maryland where I now live. Even though I was a registered Republican starting from just before Reagan ran for President, Joe Lieberman was one of the few Democrats that I would consistently vote for.

I didn't agree with him on a lot of issues, but I admired his integrity, and the fact that he was an old timey pro-America Democrat who believed in this country's greatness. I felt, that he was a good check and balance against the religious extremism of the far right, which I don't subscribe to, and a voice of reason in a political party that seemed, and now seems even more, to be making their move to bring about a Socialist and eventual Communist form of government in the United States of America.

People need to wake up and look at what is happening in this country, and realize what is at stake here. What is happening politically today is the fulmination of the slow, behind the scenes, rise of Marxism in the US that started in the 1920s, gained power in the 1930s, drove the counter-culture and antiwar movement of the 1960s and 1970s, has taken over the power base of the once great Democratic party, and now feels that it has sufficient power to start the final process of the dismantling of our Constitutional Republic form of government, solely for their egotistical elitist benefits.

I am glad that Joe Lieberman is going to run as an independent. I hope he wins. If I was still registered to vote in Connecticut, he'd have my vote hands down.

Posted by: Chip Clemmer [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 08:29 AM

Chip ... you nailed it. I went from being unaffiliated and registered as a Dem to vote for Joe. I saw myself trying to help save the Dem party from itself. Sadly, at least in this dark purple (the Governor is a repub female with a very high approval rating) state, the Dems didn't want to be saved from themselves.

The independents in CT are 45% of the base ... the Dems are 33% and the repubs are appx 20%. Do the math and you'll see how Ned Flanders (I mean Lamont) is going to be a footnote by November.
