Victory for Mt. Soledad Cross Memorial

Soledad-Cross.jpg

Mt. Soledad Cross

Finally some great news in our culture war against nihilists and atheists who are obsessed with making society look as empty and godless as they are. After being threatened with removal because an atheist's lawsuit, the Mt. Soledad War Memorial and its cross are safe. At least for the time being.

In a blow to those who work feverishly to remove Christianity from the public square, President Bush will sign legislation today that transfers the land on which the memorial stands to federal authorities. This eliminates the argument that the cross violates the California constitution.

Senate votes to put Mount Soledad cross in federal hands

With a speed and decisiveness that surprised some, the Senate on Tuesday approved a plan to transfer the land beneath the Mount Soledad war memorial to federal control in an effort to avoid a court-ordered removal of the cross that stands there.

The Senate's unanimous vote sent the cross-transfer plan to President Bush for his expected signature [which happens today]. It creates what some consider an entirely new dynamic in the 17-year effort to save the cross, but which others say is a hopeless attempt to preserve a symbol on city land that courts have said unconstitutionally favors one religion over others. [...]

The legislation would preserve the 29-foot-tall cross on Mount Soledad by vesting title to the memorial in the federal government and having the Secretary of Defense administer it. The Department of Defense would manage the monument. The Mount Soledad Memorial Association, a private group that built the current cross in 1954 to honor Korean War veterans, would continue to maintain the site.

Interesting, I just recently signed a petition through an organization (an affiliation of the Liberty Counsel) that is attempting to 'defeat the ACLU'. I recall a stry where the ACLU actually sued an organization that was going around promoting abstinance at urban high schools (because it had a Christian basis, which the organization noted was reserved for a separate, volunteer session).

This is one topic I especially like about Bush. He is not afraid to back our nation's Judeo Christian heritage. I really have to commend him for this. While I understand the seperation of Church and state, Christianity is deeply woven into our nations roots and traditions. An assault on them is nothing more that the attempt to ultimately ruin our country by turnin our society into the moral vacuum (which Tammy discusses in her book - 'The Death of Right and Wrong').

If interested, there is a book called "Eternal Vigilance" by Mathew Staver - founder of the Liberty Counsel (and the person who argued the Ten Commandments case at the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of McCreary County vs. ACLU of Kentucky).

As a native San Diegan, who for my entire life have been going to the Soledad Memorial and experienced the serene beauty of this awesome place, was close to tears when I heard you announce the signing of this bill today, and Tammy it is truly a victory for all of us Americans who can separate church from state and want to honor the brave men and women who have given their lives for our country...hip hip hooray!!!

Now what would really make it perfect would be to countersue the aclu for court costs. This has gone on for over 17 years now and the only people who profited were the sleazy lawyers. And how was a san fransicko judge allowed to hear this case anyway? What kind of people go through life looking for things to be offended by? I hope this is the happy ending we have fought for because if someone does try to take down that monument I am going to be one of the many that will be up there to stop them.

I have been a pretty religious person through-out my life so I understand the concerns religious folks have with the Mt. Soledad cross. I also understand the concerns of atheists who think this monument institutionalizes religion. I don't think the monument is an endorsement of religion. It is though a recognition of the religiosity of a lot of people who died in defense of freedom.

I think that atheists do need to spend some time with the idea that there are lots of people in this country who believe in God and have no desire to shove their religion down the throats of unbelievers. They just believe that a public display of this faith adds something to public life. Having the cross on display on behalf of all veterans, believers and atheists does nothing to diminish the contributions of atheists in American life.

Americans are Americans and whether or not they believe in God is a matter of conscience. There are perfectly reasonable arguments to support the atheist position, as a philosophical position, not as a way of being a public nuisance.
