The mainstream media (and the general public due to the media's influence) seem to think these rules are all about protecting prisoners of war as if they were some kind of global Miranda rights. One of the main purposes of the Geneva Convention was to set up rules of engagement in an effort to protect civilian populations.</p> <p>Allowing these terrorists Geneva Convention prisoner of war status implies that it is okay to attack and hide among civilians while conducting war.
