The Global Cooling Scare from 1975

Like Goldilocks, the Left just can't decide what horrible earth-destroying thing to blame on humanity. One decade it's Global Cooling. Now it's Global Warming. Yes, that's right--the Big Scary Humanity is a Scourge announcement in the 1970s was that the Earth was cooooooling. But, you see, the Left and the Establishment media were wrong then, and now they're right. Because they say so.

Actually, now according to the Establishment Media (Newsweek in this instance), it doesn't really matter if the earth is cooling or warming, the real issue is that humans are a problem, plain and simple.

Remember Global Cooling?
Why scientists find climate change so hard to predict.

[That's weird--I thought the EM and the Left insisted all scientists agreed that Global Warming caused by humans is a fact?--ed].

In April, 1975, in an issue mostly taken up with stories about the collapse of the American-backed government of South Vietnam, NEWSWEEK published a small back-page article about a very different kind of disaster. Citing "ominous signs that the earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically,"...well, if you had been following the climate-change debates at the time, you'd have known that the threat was: global cooling....

How did NEWSWEEK—or for that matter, Time magazine, which also ran a story on the subject in the mid-1970s—get things so wrong? [Uh, because they're biased and have an agenda? Just a thought.--ed.] In fact, the story wasn't "wrong" in the journalistic sense of "inaccurate." [Or, in the Bill Clinton tradition, it would hinge on what your definition of "wrong" is--ed]....But in any case, ["In any case..." Ha! That's the EM equivalent of "nevermind, whatever..."--ed.] climatologists now are mostly agreed that human impacts will swamp the effects of the Milankovitch cycles. The question has been, which specific impacts?... [Or, to translate, humans are a scourge what needs to be controlled. WHo cares what the facts are?--ed].

The point to remember, says Connolley, is that predictions of global cooling never approached the kind of widespread scientific consensus that supports the greenhouse effect today. [In other words we may have been wrong then but we're sure not wrong now!--ed]. And for good reason: the tools scientists have at their disposal now—vastly more data, incomparably faster computers and infinitely more sophisticated mathematical models—render any forecasts from 1975 as inoperative as the predictions being made around the same time about the inevitable triumph of communism. Astronomers have been warning for decades that life on Earth could be wiped out by a collision with a giant meteorite; it hasn't happened yet, but that doesn't mean that journalists have been dupes or alarmists for reporting this news. [And, of course, there's a difference in reporting what others are saying (about asteroids for example) and reporting something as fact (as they have for years about Global Warming). --ed.]

You must, must, must read the whole thing. It is the perfect example of how frantic the Left and their water-carriers the Establishment Media (EM) truly aree. I don't think I've ever seen them get their Granny Panties in such a twist as they do here. It's priceless.

A big scare of the late 60s and early 70s was "ACID RAIN" (pronounced with a scary, Halloween voice). It was humans destroying the Earth, the second of many ecology scares. (The first was the pesticide thing). There were acid rain books, movies, exposes, and many news reports, all presented with the premise that it was already a proven fact (the lakes in some valley in Germany were "dead" (killed by acid pollution falling from the skies) thus proving the emergency).
Only one problem, it wasn't true. The lakes were killed by factory discharges into the water and acid rain never existed. Oops!

The MSM still has no clue of what is talking about on anything. Remember Carl Sagan's "nuclear winter" scare fest. The problem was that he was ful of bull. His model of the earth was as smooth as a billiard ball, took no account of clouds, mountain ranges, oceans, and other natural obstacles to his fantasy of radiation covering the earth with an even layer of radiation and a uniform dust cloud over the entire planet.
Then we get global cooling--another leftist fantasy designed to scare people that had no rational computer model.
Now we get global warming with a predicted 1 degree rise in the atmospheric temperature over 100 years that must be stopped now or else. Again, no computer model worth a damn, now consideration of clouds and cosmic rays, but a great big bunch of leftist totalitarian hype that wants to shut down opposition, and which doesn't even consider the great benefits of a warmer earth. The idea is solely to scare the crap out of people so they will bow down to their totalitatarin masters such as Al Gore, Teddy Kenedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and the like.
Meanwhile real problems that are far more immediate are ignored, again so when the crunch comes the authoritarian morons and their lickspittle "scientists" can obtain even more control over the people through their dependency on the "massas" in Washington, New York, London, etc. By their gross scientific ignorance and total lack of inquisitiveness the MSM is doing its best to keep people ignorant, stupid, and placid. Thak God for the Internet, although Google with its capitulation to totaliariansim in China has become the enemy along with the MSM.

Lefty politicians and the MSM will solve "global warming" the same way they solved "global cooling", the homeless "crisis", the "impending nuclear war" with the peace-luvin USSR, "out of control" campaign spending, the "culture of corruption", "sexual harassment", and a host of other fashionable frauds they have gassed about over the past few decades. Once safely in power a bit of public posturing should keep the peasants in the dark. And afterwards nary a word will pass their lips indicating that the crisis ever had any reality outside of the alternate universe they inhabit. Nothing is easier than "curing" a malady that never existed in the first place.
