How many Tammies do you know? Sure, there's only one real Tammy, but there are also imitators and wannabes. This graph indicates a flurry of counterfeits immediately preceding and following our own Tammy. And if we can believe this odd report (I don't!), there were even a few Tammyboys.

An alternative graph hints at a recent renaissance of Tammies, coincident with the emergence of the Tammy Bruce Radio Show.

The fundamental question remains: Is Tammy a true name or merely a nickname? Tammy has been heard to comment that having a "Tammy" birth certificate is akin to having a birth certificate that reads "Bob". Would it have been better had she been given a more exotic name like "Tamara"?

Meanwhile, to touch on a more personal note, it seems that "Maynard" has fallen off the map entirely. Come on, people? Do you think I can carry on entirely by myself? I need some help here!

Please consider these words carefully when it comes time to pin names on your newly-minted little darlings.

Maynard, you need to get "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" on Nick @ Nite, or else released on DVD. Once parents see the coolness that is Maynard G. Krebs, they won't be able to resist naming their sons, an possibly some of their daughters, "Maynard".

Tammy derives from Tamzen, Tamsin, Tamson.
Tamzen is the Cornish feminine form of Thomas.

Tam is a Scottish hat. Tom is the English short form of Thomas, also rendered Tommy.

Today, Tam and Tom are pronounced differently. Centuries ago Tam/Tom were pronounced essentially the same and sounded as today's Tom. So, Tammy and Tommy both sounded like TOMMY, as in "Tommy, mee boy."

Robert Burns wrote a poem called Tam O'Shanter. The short "a" sound would be used so the name would sound as Tom O'Shonter.

There is a Scottish Blues man, Tam White, and I'm sure freinds have called him Tammy from time to time. But, thousands of American boys named Tammy - not a chance.

Being from SoCal originally, as is Tammy, this reminds me of the hamburger place, Tommy's.Its competitors name themselves Tommie's, Tomy's etc., to try to fool the public.
There is only one original Tammy. There is only one original Tommy's. Both in Los Angeles. Both are great.
