Another Pilgrim Story

A post by Maynard

Since I've been posting about the Pilgrims, here's a tidbit worthy of mention. This sounds like a racially insensitive joke, but it's actually factual; perhaps some daring soul will trot it out when he feels like challenging a political boundary without facing a stretch in a re-education camp.

Okay, here we go:

Q: What's the first thing the Indians said to the Pilgrims?

A: Welcome, English! Have you got any beer?

Yes, an Indian approached and asked, in English, for beer. The Pilgrims, dumbfounded, responded that they were out of beer; how about a nice brandy? And the rest is history.

The deserted land where the Pilgrims set up shop had originally been inhabited by the small Patuxet tribe. A Patuxet named Squanto had earlier been kidnapped and sold into slavery in Europe (twice!); his story is an incredible one. When he finally made his way home, he found his tribe had been wiped out by disease. He was taken in by the nearby Massasoit tribe, and that's where he was when the Pilgrims came along. It was Squanto and another Indian, Samoset, who first approached the newcomers. Hence the knowledge of English and the request for European refreshment.

Squanto, who had converted to Christianity in Europe, remained with the Pilgrims for the rest of his life. Coming to them after their disastrous first winter, he gave them vital information that helped them grow food and catch fish in the new land.

This story is so unlikely and so fortuitous that some see Divine guidance behind it.

I have heard this before. Do you know who did the kidnapping? It was that famous religion of peace! That's right, Muslim ships roamed the eastern coast kidnapping people to take back as slaves. Some things never change.
