News Corp Cancels OJ Book and TV Interview

But the question remains, does he still get the 3.5 million dollars? And my favorite declaration by a friend left on my voicemail about the cancellation: "Tammy! Fox Killed OJ!"

News Corp. Cancels O.J. Simpson Book and TV Special

News Corp., the parent company of book publisher HarperCollins and the FOX network, has canceled publication of the O.J. Simpson book and television special "If I Did It."

"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. "We are sorry for any pain that this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson."

While I prefer to have the marketplace reject a project, whether it be a book or a TV show, by not buying or not watching, it is nice to see Mr. Murdoch take this stand, even if it would have been better for him to have realized this was "ill considered" before the deals were made.

Perhaps it would now be a good idea, especially since it's safe to say Simpson via his "third party" will still be enriched by millions of News Corp dollars, for him to donate a comparable sum to the families of Simpson's victims.

Now, at least, the American people took a stand and made it very clear that this sort of depravity is unacceptable. It's a good message to send in general. The biggest loser here is publisher Judith Regan. For her to have agreed to pay a third party because they "had the rights" is ridiculous. She knew going in, as we all do, that Simpson would have to have someone else take the money, otherwise the Goldmans would be entitled to it. For her to accept that arrangement is disgusting, and her efforts to rationalize it have been pathetic.

There is a certain point when some people should step away from public life and work that affects our culture. It is now time for Judith Regan to do just that. Her behavior, including an affair with one of her authors, the then-married Bernard Kerik, ultimately forced her out of New York. Now she settles in Los Angeles and does this? Enough already. Someone should suggest she check out Florida, where at least another of the unwanted seems more than happy.

Here's a great example what can happen when people use their power to stand up for what's right and let their voices be heard. Enough people acted and now this murderous scumbag will be stifled from speaking his filth. Sorry to the Goldman's and Nicole's family for having to be put thru this yet again.

I know everyone is freaking out on the fact this interview was even done in the first place, but how is this any different from the scads of news organizations that line up to interview David Berkowitz and give him a platform to tell us all about what a serene reformed born-again man he is now? Or when 60 Minutes does their obligatory once-every-five-years interview with Charles Manson?

Maybe it's crazy that FOX considered this at all, but it's nothing new under the sun. News organizations drool at the prospect of giving murderers a microphone. Hell, they even put a P.O.S. like John Lennon's killer on the cover of People Magazine not once, but twice - AND made a freaking movie about him. How many made-for-TV movies have there been about guys like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, et al.

Bottom line is, I don't know why anyone is surprised or outraged. It's just the same old sensationalist song and dance. In an odd way, maybe it would have been important to give OJ a chance to show his true colors. Clark and Darden sure couldn't.

Peter,

Please allow me to express this as succicntly as I can. When there are those in this country that profit off of someone's murder, there will be more of it. Judith Regan absolutely f*ked up on this one, some of these damn publishers think this is what the American people want and until the American people stop being outraged on one hand and reaching for their wallet with the other hand, this stuff will continue.

The moral compass in this country has eroded unbelievably in the last 10-15 years, roughly with the start of the Clinton administration I would say and after the 1st gulf war, perhaps with the advent of the internet for the general population. O'Reilly said it well, we will go the way of the Romans soon enough if the moral compass is that out of whack that society allows those to profit from murder.

I sent an E-mail to O'Reilly and Colmes last night blasting them on behalf of the Fox organization for perpetrating this OJ media event. Fox talks about boycotts, when Rupert Murdoch is that capable of showing this degree of poor judgment, I have to question who is running the ship at Fox and their motives. If it wasn't for their NFL football package, I would eliminate Fox altogether from my viewing habits. Does anyone consider the possibility that Murdoch set this up as a hot button issue in his belief that would stoke ratings? I am not a believer in conspiracy theories normally, but the one who benefits from all of this is Fox when one stops and thinks about with all the controversy. CNN encroached on Fox's superiority in the most recent election, perhaps there are others that are tiring of Fox News's schtick and methods.

With the loss of Fox's credibility, I am relegated now to only the internet for my news sourcing. There is basically nothing on TV news including Fox that is credible and above reproach any longer. O'Reilly often bemoaned the fact that the information systems in this country are now corrupted, that is one of the truer analyses I have heard recently on the state of the media in the USA. Perhaps that is how it should be, I much rather go to blogs with specialists and experts that give me insights into what is really going on out there and without the damn liberal bias. I don't ask for the brainwashing when I turn on the TV, and I resent that they jam it to me like that when all I am interested in is what is going on in the world.
