The Jerusalem Post is reporting that Palestinian Authority officials have accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of “offending the Palestinians’ feelings” during her visit earlier this week to Ramallah, where she met with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
An example of the PA complaint:
The [PA] official claimed that while Merkel refused to meet with families of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, she focused during her talks with Abbas on the need to release kidnapped IDF Cpl. Gilad Schalit, who has been held in the Gaza Strip since last June. In addition, he noted, Merkel met with the families of missing IDF soldiers during her visit to Jerusalem.
Translation: Merkel expressed sympathy for the victims of terrorism, rather than the perpetrators.
Thank God for Angela Merkel. A woman, and a leader, apparently willing to stand on principle and willing to be unpopular. How refreshing!
If our leaders–and our allies leaders–were doing their jobs, we would be “offending feelings” of those most deserving on a regular basis.
Good for Merkel for what she didn’t say during her trip to Israel. Shame on Olmert for what he did say. At his joint press conference with Merkel, he offered to meet with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (which does not recognize Israel) and other Arab leaders at a regional meeting for peace negotiations. He said Israel was prepared to make “big and painful” concessions. The Arabs replied by saying they’d convene peace talks only after Israel accepts the Arab peace plan. That plan calls for Israel to return to pre-1967 borders and to accept the return of millions of Palestinian “refugees”. For their part the Arabs promise to normalize relations with Israel. So the Arabs will negotiate for peace only after Israel surrenders.
Today’s news is that Olmert is denying he sent a peace message to Syria via Pelosi. Does Pelosi deserve the benefit of the doubt on this one?
Hi Pat,
So then if Israel:
1 accepts all of the Arab terms
2 allows a standing army of over a million in its borders
Then the Arabs will talk?
To say what? the eulogy for Israel?
Secondly, does Olmert deserve the benefit of the doubt?
The Palestinian Authority is really doing a very good job in selling the idea that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim.
