NJ Attorney General Derails 'Sanctuary City' Scourge

The fact that it took the brutal murders of three promising young people to snap politicians out of their Politically Correct haze about the scourge of illegal aliens is, in itself, unconscionable. I would normally say 'better late then never' but obviously some things are not okay being late. Just ask the families of the Newark massacre victims.

AG: Cops must ask suspects for immigration status

Attorney General Anne Milgram today ordered all local police officers in New Jersey to inquire about the immigration status of suspects charged with serious crimes, and to notify federal immigration authorities if there is reason to believe the suspect is in the country illegally.

The requirements, which go into effect immediately, apply to suspects arrested for specific indictable offenses and for driving while intoxicated, Milgram said. If the suspect is unable to prove he or she is legally in the United States, the police officer is required to notify Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, she said. The policy also specifies that prosecutors and courts be notified...

The 7-page directive also sets guidelines for municipalities that apply to federal immigration officials for Section 287(g) authority, which deputizes local, county and state officers to enforce federal immigration laws. While the directive grants the full exercise of federal immigration authority at county jails and state prisons for incarcerated undocumented immigrants, Milgram said, street cops participating in 287(g) could invoke federal immigration authority only after an arrest is made.

I wonder if Geraldo will call the NJ AG an anti-immigrant radical now. He was ranting against Michelle Malkin for having the audacity to point out the obvious on this one.

And probably that this is "profiling" too, Pat. Ya know what, FINE! ASK ME!! Ask every single Swede, Taiwanese, Australian, Tibetan, Nigerian, and little green Martian you stop for biting their cuticles, so what?!!

This prohibition has been akin to requiring police to ignore an AK-47 sitting on the passenger seat of a car they've just stopped for a stolen tag. No reason to be suspicious, and besides it's none of their business. It's much more important to be fair -- and to avoid pissing off the Mexican Senate. Yeah we'd better tiptoe around THAT world power while we bend over for Iran. J

The next problem here is that some self-important self-righteous sanctuary city will presumably sue the state to try to enjoin enforcement of the AG's order, citing its home rule charter and probably provisions of the NJ constitution relating to municipal self-government.
