The End of the World!

A panic by Maynard

By the way, boys and girls, another collection of eco-catastrophes are heading our way. But nobody has bothered to tell you about this because they serve no political agenda.

The scientists are warning of the impending reversal of the earth's magnetic poles. This is a natural process, and it happens every 500,000 years or so, although not on a clockwork schedule. The strength of the magnetic field has been falling by 5% a century recently, which indicates we're heading for another shift a century or two down the road. This entails a long intermediate period where the magnetic field goes missing, thus exposing the earth to the full fury of solar wind and radiation.

Last year, the Sci-Fi channel ran a fear-inspiring documentary, Countdown to Doomsday. It laid out ten end-of-the-world scenarios:

  1. Supervolcano (Yosemite is ready to blow)
  2. Asteroid Impact
  3. Global Pandemic
  4. Mass Extinction
  5. Giant Solar Flare
  6. Nuclear Terrorism
  7. Hot Air (better known as Global Warming; Al Gore is interviewed)
  8. Gamma-Ray Burst
  9. Machine Rebellion (remember "The Terminator" and "I, Robot"?)
  10. Alien Invasion (space aliens, and it won't help to grant them Z-Visas)

These possibilities are all real and threatening, but I don't see much point in panic. This is not to minimize concerns about a human-driven rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide. But let's maintain some perspective and some wisdom. I'm worried more about human evil than I am about eco-catastrophes. I think history will back me up on this point.

Yeah, one little gamma ray burst, within 1,000 light years or so, would ruin the whole day, dontchathink?

I'd say that on the man-made side the nukes have to occupy the top of the list. On nature's side it does seem like a volcano is the mostly likely major disaster.

At least global warming is off the list.

Progressives and liberals will just raise taxes on productivity, sell carbon credits, or outlaw SUV's and any one of these catastrophes will be averted. (perhaps they will even sacrifice a virgin because of the extreme threat).

There are only TWO WORDS that could cause me real and true all-consuming panic:

"Beer shortage".

I think the Machine Rebellion has already started with the release of Windows Vista.

If the magnetic field is weakening which affects solar wind and radiation, perhaps that is what's causing "global warming".

Nah, that would be "inconvenient" for some people.

maynard,
you come up with some fine topics, this one included, however i believe Yellowstone is the super-volcano and not Yosemite. note the hot springs and geysers.
