A note by Maynard

Some observers wring their hands at the West’s ever-rising tide of in-your-face depravity. Certainly a civil society has never seen anything like this before!

If it makes you feel any better, celebrity misbehavior is nothing new. Britney Spears, pictured above left, ventures into town wearing boots and a shirt but no pants. But Britney is merely following the lead of old-school feminist Daisy Duck (right), who pioneered the pantless style ‘way back in the 1940’s.

Life imitates art. And the more things change, the more they stay the same.

From what I hear, Daisy was lucky that the good ‘ol studio system was around to squash those rumors of threesomes with Minnie and Pluto. Disney was a wild place back in the day…

Great topic! I just wrote a similar blog post, comparing Paris Hilton’s jail time vs. Mae West’s. Mae served a few weeks in prison in 1927 after being found guilty on obscenity charges for writing a play titled “Sex.” Unlike Paris Hilton, Mae West happily served her time (saying it would be “interesting” to go to jail) and was proud to be called a bad girl.

Sigh, poor Britney. She’s a redneck girl from Kenner (one of the most downmarket of the New Orleans suburbs) who if she hadn’t found fame would unquestionably be dancing in a strip club on Bourbon Street, and not one of the classier ones either: she’s been in over her head for years. But she’s an American original, and despite everything I can’t help liking her, wishing her well, and hoping she finally gets her head screwed on straight. Otherwise I have a feeling she’ll be dead within a few years.

You educated me about the Wood poster, Maynard. I was unaware of it either because I was only two years old when it came out or perhaps I’m more innocent and angelic than I give myself credit for.

    Sprouting halo now… 😉
