Last Minute: On Fox by Phone at 9am PT re NOW's Abandonment of the British Teacher

That's in 4 minutes folks. They just called me about NOW's just released 'statement' about the British teacher in Sudan facing lashes and prison over her students naming a Teddy Bear "Muhammad." NOW's position? They're not taking one. That's right, they're not taking a stand. As you can imagine, I have plenty to say. It will be on the phone, and then I immediately start Tammy Radio.

Here is more coverage.

Sudan Charges British Teacher With Insulting Religion

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan on Wednesday charged a British teacher with insulting religion and inciting hatred, a crime punishable by up to 40 lashes, six months in prison or a fine, after she named a class teddy bear "Muhammad."

The charges come a day after a 7-year-old Sudanese boy said Gilliam Gibbons, 54, asked him as part of a school assignment what he wanted to call the stuffed animal and he said, 'Muhammad,' after his name.

A spokeswoman for the National Organization for Women said the situation "is definintely on the radar, and N.O.W. is not ignoring it.

But she added that the U.S.-based organization is "not putting out a statement or taking a position."

Radio personality Tammy Bruce, former president of the Los Angles chapter of the National Organization for Women and past member of their board of directors, criticized the organization for not taking a stand.

“We have a duty to make a difference for women around the world,” Bruce told FOX News. “The supposed feminist establishment is refusing to take a position in this regard because they have no sensibility of what is right anymore. They're afraid of offending people. They are bound by political correctness.”

“The American feminist movement has not taken one stand to support the women of Iraq, the women of Afghanistan, the women of Iran,” she said. “It is the United States Marines who have been doing the feminist work by liberating women and children around the world.”

Well! I was just about to drop you a note, saying NOW has finally spoken up about the horrible treatment of women under Islamic law. But not only are you on top of it, you're on Fox already! And NOW is NOT taking a view? Well, that's consistent, I suppose. They didn't have anything to say about the punishment of a rape victim, right? But this one is more confusing- they spoke up to say they have nothing to say?

Piddle! We were having a fire drill here at the DuMont network (yes, an actual fire drill) so I missed it! Bah!

Posted by: PeteRFNY [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 09:40 AM

Tammy,
Thank you again for speaking for women. I was shocked that NOW would not take a stand on the school teacher in Sudan. NOW moved away from the voice of American women long ago. Thank you for maintaining sanity and logic in the face of everything we have ever known to be right, suddenly becoming wrong. I, for one, am still a thinking being. Shame on so many of my gender who abandon their intelligence in order to honor some sort of warped, bizarro world PC. Keep it up Tammy. Keep allowing me to vicariously vent through your voice. And thanks letting me vent here.

I have written in support of your position on my w
Website. Here is a sample:

Tammy Bruce, former NOW president is speaking out against NOW for not supporting the teacher in Sudan who will receive 40 lashes for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Mohamed. Let's not even mention the rape victim getting 200 lashes in Saudi Arabia. NOW doesn't mention her either.

Bruce said it is disgusting that the feminist movement is so left now that they cannot speak out against the most vile forms of religious oppression. She said not once did NOW or any feminist organization speak out and mobilize to support Muslim women against the oppression of their religion and their priest rulers in Afghanistan or Iraq.

I say right on sister. Who ARE these people that keep collecting money in the name of the feminist movement based on the work women such as myself did?

Where were these opportunist then, when there was real work being done? Slinking around in bars, acting out their childhood traumas, coming to meetings to invent drama, that is where they were, distracting women focused on the goal.

Most of the women who gave their lives to the feminist movement went on to "real" life, got jobs in the world, and took on other responsibilities. Only the bottom feeders stayed, endlessly fighting for power in the organizationS, criticizing every petty detail of the work real feminist did, demanding ideological purity in the extreme, trashing, absorbed in the drama they created when a normal person tried to intervene and move the organization toward institutional change. This went on until everyone serious about social change was gone in disgust.

And in fairness, the time for movement ran out. There is a rhythm to social change, an ebb and flow which needs a time of adjustment after major change.

Now when people say, where is the feminist movement, the answered is that the feminist are scattered across the landscape and not organized. But we ought to be clear that they are not in national NOW for sure.

I am horrified to think that our organization will become like the civil rights organizations, the NAACP and others. They are without national perspective, have no systemic analysis based on institutional racism, are useless to black advancement, defending thugs like Michael Vick, associating with abusers like Vick and Michael Jackson, waiting for handouts from the filth of the world.

What can feminists do to take back our organizations before these traitors to women get the reward for their silence from the next administration? We must find out when the national elections will be held - form a party and run as a block for national NOW election. You must be sent from the local chapter to the national convention as a delegate to vote for the president. Elect Tammy Bruce. That means we have to join the local chapters.

They'll speak up when someone finds a way to blame this incident on George Bush.

So NOW won't speak up in support of a woman who teaches at a Christian school? Despicable but hardly surprising.

Posted by: Jack of Clubs [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 02:46 PM

I'm sorry, but the Western World has GOT to step up and call these people what they are: Neanderthals and thugs. We'll never be able to get on peaceably with Islamic fundemetalists because they want the world around them to remain intrenched in 600 A.D. We can either move forward as a human race, or be dragged backwards my intimidation and force.

Great comments on Fox today Tammy! And what a shameful, shameful disgrace is NOW!

Your point about how the freest, most powerful women on Earth will barely lift a finger to help their beaten-down sisters in other parts of the world was tremendously powerful.

Posted by: AntonK [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 05:31 PM

NOW and every other group representing supposed disadvantaged classes have become nothing more than partisan shills for the anti-capitalism Democratic party. They won't say it because their legitimacy and funding will dry up, but they're all basically frauds.
How amazingly Orwellian that no one dares to speak his mind or state the obvious for fear of ostracism from the left. Meanwhile, the left itself never states its real motives or agendas, disguising itself as something it is not.

Posted by: helpunderdog [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 05:34 PM

Thanks for linking up Tammy's appearance, Ashley.

And, as always, thank you, Tammy, for being a voice in the proverbial wilderness. While there are other authentic conservative lesbian feminists out there (as you know from those of us here on your blog), no one in the media is saying what you do coming from your background and perspective.

Your presence, your clarity and your passion about this issue (and all the other issues) make such a difference. Never, ever doubt that.

Posted by: Kelly [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 06:23 PM

Who was it that said "all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" in this case NOW is doing nothing, thank you Tammy for all that you do.

Posted by: eah [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 06:32 PM

You gotta love NOW's response to all of this where they say "We're not ignoring it" while saying very little, if anything, of substance about it. Talkin Horse was onto something. If only George W. Bush or the evil "Christian right" could be blamed, NOW would be marching in the streets.

What gets me the most about the pseudo-feminist movement is how they'll get worked up over the presumed threat to Roe v. Wade if...dare I even say it...a conservative USSC Justice is nominated. But when it comes to an actual theocracy doing actual bad things to actual women, NOW does their best Marcel Marseau impression.

File NOW's statement under "This is our forceful statement of being completely wishy-washy!"

Posted by: TLindaman [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 07:30 PM

I'm not surprised NOW has nothing to say about the British teacher. NOW is a clique- a bunch of like minded hard left militant feminists who only care about their 'own kind'- mostly white, urban, upper income liberals. This British teacher in Sudan obviously need not apply.

Posted by: Barry in CO [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 12:59 AM

About this time 6 years ago, Kim Gandy was on O'Reilly all smiles and happy as a clam commenting on how wonderful it was that women and girls in Afghanistan were being liberated. After yelling at the tv, I wrote Ms. Gandy asking what in the world she, or more specifically - NOW, had ever done to help liberate the women and girls of Afghanistan. Clearly, nothing! Instead, the very people NOW hate - the US military - were responsible for bringing about the changes.

And again, NOW is doing nothing to bring about change in the way women are treated in backward, sexist and oppressive countries. They would rather be politically aligned to undermine the only country from which they can use their soapbox than bring about better conditions for the treatment of women and girls everywhere.

This whole situation with the British school teacher absolutely breaks my heart, and it angers me in equal measure. A 54-year-old woman sentenced to 40 lashes because her students named a teddy bear 'Muhammad' is absolutely insane - just as insane as all the Muhammad's blowing up people all over the place. I have a feeling this poor woman will be used to send a 'message' to the little children she teaches which will certainly scar them for life. It is also a message to the rest of us of what we can expect to take place - in our own 'safety zone'.

Unfortunately, NOW is sending a message all over the world, too: we stand in silent submission with your oppressors.

Seems this is one time NOW has something in common with our first lady, Karen Hughes, Nancy Pelosi, etc.

Posted by: artgal [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 05:15 AM

As noted by BARRY IN CO, NOW is made up of Stepford divorcees whose view of the world around them is narrow and cramped.

The basic problem is still the barbarism of a 6th century religion whose followers have lived off of theft, piracy, and the work and ingenuity of their betters for 1500 years. Its about time the Muslim world either had a reformation and got civilized, or that it be thrown in the ash heap of history along with Mithraism and the other old religions that are studied now for their quaintness, when studied at all.

Posted by: St. Thor [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 05:59 AM

I LOVE your last paragraph. It should be made into a t-shirt. If they don't have opinion on this situation it shows how irrelevant NOW has become.

Posted by: Hatoole [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 06:42 AM

Sounds like when the going gets tough, NOW gets going ... back home to hide behind the couch. Typical.

Posted by: Memphis Steve [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 07:15 AM

So the hags of NOW have been exposed (pun intended) for the frauds they are. Seems they only "talk the talk" and don't "walk the walk". Thank you Tammy for showing the world their hypocrisy.

Posted by: Rich B [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 07:16 AM

I feel that this is a religious freedom issue more than a women's rights issue. The imprisonment of the woman for having an affair and riding in a car with unrelated men is a much better issue. NOW's silence on the latter is shameful. Perhaps liberals are really afraid of Muslim men. Maybe the Muslim treatment of people like Salmon Rushdie and Theo Van Gogh has been effective. The last vestige of resistance to Worldwide Muslim intimidation seems to be in American Conservatism. Western liberals have capitulated and are going to willingly accept the Burka and Sharia Law.

To Rod, you are not an exJarhead, do you understand? You have not been able to call yourself an ex-Jarhead for a number of years! You will hereafter refer to yourself as a former Jarhead! Is that clear? The only person who may refer to himself as an exJarhead is Representative Murtha, and that only after the United States Marine Corps excommunicates him. I trust that you're not unduly inconvenienced by this AlMar and will comply immediately!
