Bhutto's Son in Symbolic Role; Husband Takes Control

Here's the latest on control of Bhutto's party and what it means for elections.

Bhutto's Son, Husband to Succeed Her

Benazir Bhutto's 19-year-old son - a student with no political experience - was named symbolic leader of her party Sunday, while her husband took effective control, extending Pakistan's most enduring political dynasty.

The major parties appeared to agree that the elections should take place as scheduled on Jan. 8 despite street violence and political turmoil triggered by the assassination of Bhutto. The Election Commission is to discuss the timing of the polls Monday.

A successful vote would bolster U.S.-backed plans to restore democracy to the nuclear-armed country as it battles rising Islamic extremism.

Rioting subsided Sunday after destruction that left at least 44 dead and caused ten of millions of dollars in damage, but bitterness remained over the government's response to the gun and suicide attack that killed Bhutto.

...The party official said that if Bilawal were chosen, the party may set up an advisory council until he finishes his studies and is available to lead the party on a full-time basis.

Analysts said the council was likely to be headed by Zardari, Fahim and the party's Punjab province president Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

"I think Asif will run the show to keep the place warm for his son Bilawal, just like Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi is doing for her young son Rahul in India," political commentator Najam Sethi told AFP.

Meanwhile Sethi predicted the PPP would demand the establishment of a new national caretaker government and a reformed election commission for holding free and fair elections, a move that would likely see them delayed.

The Pakistan Constitution

(2) A person shall not be qualified for election as President unless he is a Muslim of not less than forty-five years of age and is qualified to be elected as member of the National Assembly.
