We have been hearing for years that Senator John McCain gives “straight talk†and his bus has been endlessly referred to as the “Straight Talk Express.†But endless repetition does not make something true.
The fact that McCain makes short, blunt statements does not make him a straight-talker. There are short, blunt lies — and he told a big one on the eve of the Florida primary, when he claimed that Mitt Romney had advocated a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq…
McCain was one of “the Keating Five†— senators who used their influence to try to protect a failing savings & loan company, which also became the subject of a corruption investigation.
During the 2000 primaries, the Associated Press reported Senator McCain’s joking about people with Alzheimer’s. This went beyond bad taste because (1) it was known at the time that Ronald Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer’s and (2) the media to whom McCain was pandering hated Ronald Reagan.
It is especially ironic now to see McCain wrapping himself in the mantle of President Reagan.
Super Tuesday may be the voters’ last chance to bring the so-called “straight talk express†to a screeching halt.

Let me see….Hmmm, Keating Five, Savings & Loan—wasn’t there a Bush somewhere in that little scandal where people’s money just disappered? It’s just so hard to keep it all straight in my feeble brain. Aw shucks, I have another headache. Can anybody refresh my memory? I’ll be glad when Hillary’s 8 years is completed so we can get back to the Bush’s turn.
At least the Bush folks didn’t kill INNOCENT civilians i.e. Randy Weaver’s wife and son and don’t forget the branch davidians. It seems to me if you hold a view that isn’t politically correct with a democrat, you stand a very good chance of winding up dead. HMMMMM.
What is your point, JDB? The Keating 5 were (1) Alan Cranston (D-CA); (2) Denis DeConcini (D-AZ); (3) John Glenn (D-OH); (4) Donald Reigle, Jr. (D-MI); and (5) John McCain (R-AZ). There was no Bush anywhere near Keating. But the Keating 5 was made up 80% of Democrats thus allowing that party to keep its hold on its title of having the majority of corrupt politicians in the last half of the 20th Century.
THOR, my point was simply that the Bush dynasty benefited from the Savings & Loan scandal albeit small amounts (millions) out of 1.4 trillion. Just like pigs at a trough, there was no coordination, just greed. I’m sick of politicians with no integrity and now we have “say anything do anything” McCain and Hillary. My reference, although somewhat obliqe, was to Neil Bush. I should have been more specific. However, I’m pretty sure you will see another Bush in the whitehouse. I hope I’m wrong.
Thanks for the clarification, JDB. I had forgotten that Neil Bush was in the S&L industry back then. Although any benefit he had was secondary and the real corruption lay in politicians who could play with laws for the benefit of their friend, Keating. I too hope you are wrong about another Bush in the White House–two have been almost more than the country can take.
