Nancy Reagan Endorses McCain

Ron and Nancy

I miss them.

Some may say this is to be expected considering he has an (R) after his name, but the truth is she doesn't have to endorse anyone and yet she did. While I respect this endorsement more than others, McCain still needs to somehow find the will, the courage, the discipline, the respect, whatever you call it, to speak directly to us, Independent Conservatives, and explain why we should vote for him. For me, Mrs. Reagan's endorsement is nice, but not enough.

Nancy Reagan to Endorse McCain

Former first lady Nancy Reagan planned to endorse John McCain for president on Tuesday, as the Arizona senator continued to collect the backing of leading Republicans who might help him win over critical conservative voters...In a statement before the event, Reagan said she typically waits until after the GOP convention to announce her support but she decided to do so now because it is clear the Republican Party has chosen its nominee.

"John McCain has been a good friend for over thirty years," Reagan said. "My husband and I first came to know him as a returning Vietnam War POW, and were impressed by the courage he had shown through his terrible ordeal. I believe John's record and experience have prepared him well to be our next president."

Yes, Tammy, I miss them, too. And the simpler times that photo represents...

What was the phrase from that song...?

"Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind..."

Yes, a simpler time it was...

But the past is past...

Must keep going...

I cannot think about Nancy Reagan without recalling my first visit to the Reagan Library--for a company holiday party, of all things. At that time, a number of photographs from Ronald Reagan's funeral surrounded the rotunda just past the main entry. The one that nearly tore my heart from my chest and leaps immediately to mind for me is the one of Nancy and Patti Davis sitting next to each other, Patti gripping her mother's hand in her own, both visibly devastated, and no clarity at all as to who was deriving comfort from whom, if either. Knowing the difficulties in Patti's relationship with her father, and the long road to reconciliation, only served to make the image that much more striking.

God bless the memory of President Reagan, and God bless Nancy, Patti, Ronald Jr., and Michael.

Okay, so we don't like the GOP nominee. All of us Regan conservatives are disapointed with the direction of the party.
Those of us who care have two basic choices. Switch to a viable party that better represents our vision for the direction of our country, or do what we can to keep the GOP in power, and work from with in to put the GOP back on course.
Do you attend party caucuses, conventions and get involved in the process of writing the GOP party platform? Are you a member of your GOP county central committee? (Those positions are not difficult to get). Are you on any of your district GOP candidates stearing committees?
Complaining along with talk radio and pulling your hair out while you listen to the positions of the lovely cast of candidates will not get the people in power to legislate the kind of America we need. You need to be willing to go down to one of the thousands of Independance Halls of this country and pound your fist and do the hard nuts and bolts work that is required to turn the rudder of this country in the right direction.

Amen, ahwatukeejohn!

When I first moved to FL, the only reason I registered as a Republican was to vote in the primaries.

After the debacle of 2006, I decided to get personally involved with the party instead of spending all my time yelling at my tv and radio. Anyone who is registered can join groups like the Republican Executive Committee of your county, the Young Republicans [officially meaning R's under 40] and/or the Women's Republican groups. Membership in these organizations allows you to be personally exposed to elected officials and candidates. That contact gives you the opportunity to meet decent conservative candidates for office that you can have a direct hand in helping to elect. (You just offer to volunteer, and they'll be glad to give you specific tasks.) And the local and state-level candidates of today will be the Federal candidates tomorrow.

A guy I know who is a registered Libertarian joked with me about needing to "get the socialists out" of the GOP.
I said, "What do you think I'm doing in the Republican Executive Committee?"

I miss them as well Tammy. I went to the Reagan Library, when he was lying in state, a very emotional experience. Oh how I miss him!! Let's hope we can continue his legacy.

Awat / Ashley - I second that Amen! As I like to tell people, I live in a deep Red area of a hopeless Blue state (NJ). The Republican Club in my area is very active, always doing whatever we can to get out the vote. It gets disheartening when you live is a state like NJ that has many Conservative areas but is overrun by Urban Liberals - you feel like you do all this work for nothing. The key is to never give in and fight. The other option is too scary to consider.

Shocking! I would have pegged her for an Obama gal. Too bad she didn't come out of her haze a few months ago and endorse someone a little closer to Ronnie's example of what a conservative should be namely Mitt Romney.

i have to admit going through my teenage years when they were in office i was not too thrilled with reagan- but i was a teenager, not particularly interested in politics- mainly just pissed off at everything and everyone and as these things go i have only come to appreciate his legacy with age.

it's worth noting in my world, but probably not anyone else's who calls themselves ' conservative', that nancy's god mother is/ was one of the most influential women in silent films- and a lesbian- alla nazimova. she's usually only mentioned when valentino's career and life is talked about now- but she was one of the most accomplished actresses on the stage known for her work with ibsen's plays and was one of the wealthiest women in hollywood at the time, she controlled all the movies she was in- most of which no longer exist( compared to now when men control all hollywood and rarely use women of any age in important roles). her contributions and legacy are often ignored and it's just not right to ignore a sister.
