Pennsylvania Open Thread; Hillary Wins

hillarywins.jpg

Good for her.

According to Drudge exit polls show Hillary ahead, but by single digits. As we all know, however, exit polls are silly and useless. I expect Hillary to win big. I'll update this post through the evening. The polls close at 8pm ET.

3:20p PT:

CBS: Clinton, Obama Down To The Wire In Pa.

Politico: Early Exits

AP: Early Pennsylvania exit poll results

And from earlier today:

Obama prepares to spin loss as victory

Barack Obama could have had a worse Pennsylvania primary. DNA tests could have revealed Tony Rezko to be his father. David Axelrod could have absconded with $40 million from his campaign treasury. He could have bowled a 36.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, on the other hand, could hardly have dreamed of a finer time to tout her Scranton roots in one of her several home states. The seven-week gap between primary contests began with video of Obama’s former pastor shrieking that “America’s chickens have come home to roost” and ended with Obama explaining his way out of what sounded like an insult to the gun-owning, God-fearing Democrats of central and western Pennsylvania during a debate that amounted to a 3-on-1 grilling.

But instead of deteriorating into a snoozer of a Clinton blowout, polls that had her up an average of 16 percentage points in mid-March now show her up an average of just 6 points. And both camps — including a visibly energized Obama campaign in recent days — are now preparing to spin Tuesday’s results as a victory.

“I’m not predicting a win. I’m predicting it’s going to be close and that we are going to do a lot better than people expect,” Obama told the Pittsburgh radio station KDKA Tuesday.

Loser.

4:46pm PT:

One of the first indications that the Hillary win could be quite big.

CNN Political Ticker: Exit polls: Ohio v. Pennsylvania

CNN) — Pennsylvania's Democratic electorate is remarkably similar to Ohio's — a state where Clinton won by 10 points on March 4.

But a look at the exit polls shows Pennsylvania voters are significantly older than those who voted in Ohio's primary — a fact that will likely give Clinton a boost.

Twenty-seven percent of voters in Pennsylvania were over the age of 65. In Ohio, those voters only made up 14 percent of the electorate.

Seniors have consistently supported Clinton overwhelmingly and Pennsylvania is no different — she's winning 61 percent of voters 65 and over. Clinton did even better among Ohio seniors, winning 72 percent of their vote.

5pm PT:

Polls in Pennsylvania have closed. It's officially over. Thank goodness. Clinton is "dominating" her traditional groups, women, seniors, union households, those without a college degree

Obama's best groups: the black vote and extraordinary 92%, young people 58%, urban voters 69%, college grads, and upper income voters.

Independents, however, which usually go to Obama to some degree are split evenly in Penn. Not a good sign for Barack. Hillary's numbers with white men is also better than it has been.

Fox News at this point is not calling the race.

6:05pm PT

Both Fox and CNN have called the state for Hillary. Good for her Now the issue becomes, by how much. With 3% in, Hillary is ahead by 10 points. I think she'll hold that lead, and may even build on it.

Fox: Clinton Projected Winner of Pa. Democratic Primary

Hillary Clinton has won the Pennsylvania Democratic primary, FOX News projects, riding to victory with the aid of her core constituencies.

Barack Obama and Clinton, though, are carefully watching their margins to gauge success in the Keystone State. Pre-election surveys showed Clinton leading for weeks in Pennsylvania, but her margin will be critical in shaping how her flagging campaign is viewed going into the remaining nine primaries and caucuses.

With just 3 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton had 55 percent and Obama had 45 percent.

Today some of my students voted for the first time. A local tv station had a list of questions on line that lead you to the candidate that most reflects your views. So they wanted to know if they should vote for Hillary or BHO. Some looked really surprised when a picture of John McCain appeared at the end. PA is a closed primary. I hope they remember that in November. Voter turnout was really light in my area.

I tip my lid to Steve Harrigan for having the manners to just acknowledge, politely, the mud cookie he paid 2 cents for tasting and buying from the Haiti mud cookie vendor there by keeping his diginity and hers also, even though it reequired him to take a bite of it and chew it, too, to complete the charade.
