The Brits Want Thatcher Back

MTPhoto.jpg

So, the Germans elect conservative, pro-America Merkel, the French elect conservative, pro-America Sarkozy and now the English want Margaret Thatcher back.

And the Left wants you to think the world hates us, as Obama and Clinton keep talking about 'repairing our image with the world.' I like it the way it is, thank you very much.

Margaret Thatcher 'would win election today'

Margaret Thatcher at her peak would sweep to power in a general election held today, according to an opinion poll for The Daily Telegraph.

The YouGov survey emphatically confirms the enduring political appeal of the country's first woman prime minister, who left office undefeated 18 years ago.

Baroness Thatcher comfortably surpassed Tony Blair when people were asked who they would pick to lead the country at the height of their powers if they had the choice. David Cameron, the Conservative leader, trailed far behind both - but was still ahead of Gordon Brown.

Almost two thirds of Tory voters said they would prefer Lady Thatcher to the current party leader...the Thatcherite legacy continues to shape Britain. It shifted the political axis from state-centred collectivism to private enterprise and the free market, forcing Labour to abandon old-style socialism.

Brava. And the world thanks and owes you a debt of gratitude, Lady Thatcher.

The reason for Mrs Thatcher's enduring popularity is simple, she's an actual CONSERVATIVE, who believed in CONSERVATIVE solutions.

Since the Tory Party grandees (alleged conservatives) ditched Mrs Thatcher, they have degenerated into the big government model that many of my conservative American friends would recognize from their experience with the RINOs.

The middle has been pushed so far left by the ruling special interests, the bottomless pit of the socialist health service... that the current leader of the Conservative party is so befuddled by politicl correctness, he wouldn't go gung-ho for proven conservative free-enterprise solutions, even if he understand that he would win in a landslide.

I nominate Tammy for PotUS? Anyone second?

The U.K.(and the U.S.)need only stop and look around for a younger more energetic version of Margaret Thatcher (or Reagan). There are many. Thatcher should be allowed to remain in her elder stateswoman role. Party hacks stupidly use complex, not always democratic, criteria to raise up candidates.

PAPER_TIGER, per my previous post, it would be a start.

Jack, I worked for the Tory Party and my admiration for Lady Thatcher is second to none. That said, the political center in the UK was WAY to the left of the US for decades before her, and even she only managed to pull it back so far towards sanity. Talk to almost anyone in the UK outside, say, a right-wing think-tank, about privatizing the NHS or the BBC, and they'll still look at you like you have three heads: not because it's a BAD idea to them but it's an outright INCONCEIVABLE idea.

David Cameron isn't Mrs. T by a long shot, but he isn't Gordon Brown either. The Tories have just about gotten over more than a decade of seeing themselves as unelectable: they'll move further right between now and the next election as they finally take advantage of their lead in the polls.

The world does not hate America - the Left does.

Posted by: Ripper [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 7, 2008 09:42 AM

Dave .. I should have been clearer.

It could be read I meant pushing the center way left, therby ragging "conservative policians" with it, occurred after Lady T.

You are dead on, of course. That happened a long time ago. Don't want to bore our American pals, but four words for starters.. Ted Heath &!%@ ****.

He reminds me a lot of President Bush in many ways.

I have wanted Margaret Thatcher to run for US president since at least 1992. I know there is a consitutional problem with that, but she is much more American than most of the candidates we have fielded in the meantime. Certainly more so than any currently running for office.

And we get criticized for fondly remembering and wanting Reagan back...

There is no justice in the world of politics, it seems...eh?

Yes, Baroness Maggie is a gem, indeed. A vanishing breed.

J o'C, agree with you 110% re Baroness Thatcher's close identification with Americanism. O, how I wish that she and Reagan had had another 8 years sharing Western power! She may not be legally able to be PotUS, but, given US citizenship, I do not see anything that would prevent her from holding positions such as, oh, SecDef, SecState, or US Ambassador to the (puke!) UN...
