Confessions of a Kook

A post by Maynard

On her weekend show, Tammy played this Obama quote from his speech in Roseburg, Oregon, telling us how things were going to change when he took over:

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times . . . and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. That's not leadership. That's not going to happen."

Oddly enough, I agree with these noble goals. I despise SUVs, and my car gets 30 mpg, and I telecommute as much as I can and walk or bike around town and carry stuff home in a backpack and then recycle the containers. And my residential sarcophagus is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, so I take off my shirt or toss on an extra sweater. And I watch what eat, and I feel very virtuous and superior, and I lament that too many people have taken the prosperity of this great nation as license to engage in endless hedonism, and I wish I could change some hearts and minds.

In other words, I am a kook, and you can mock me. But I think it's cool to be a kook like me, because I work for a living and pay my taxes and am not in a position to enforce my kookery on anyone. And now Obama opens his mouth and says something I'd like to cheer, but instead he scares the hell out of me, because he's scrambling to put himself in a place where he can bring the coercive hand of government down on our heads, and that takes all the fun out of the nuttiness.

This harkens back to Michelle's earlier promise about her husband:

"He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism . . . that you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed."

Michelle, I like my life as usual, and I don't need your husband's help to be better, and all I want is to be left alone. Has the country really gotten to the point where our elected officials must chase after me? Maybe so. Sometimes I fear that the Obamas of the world are right, and we are unworthy of our freedoms. We must be controlled, for our own good and the good of the planet.

I confess, and this is more of my kooky dogma, that I prefer having personal freedom. And I feel guilty saying this, knowing that so many people are going to eat wrong and drive wrong and generally choose wrong, and it's sad and terribly frustrating to watch. Somebody ought to do something. But I feel unworthy to seize control, and I don't trust the man who aspires to seize control. I fear a cure that is worse than the disease, and so I oppose progress.

You know what really troubles me? If Obama were correct, then there should be a bittersweet aura in his crowd. A funereal lament for the passing of the era of freedoms which, like Sauron's Ring of Power, pulled us away from the righteous path. But when Obama tells his people he's going to control them, there is unambiguous celebration. Something is frighteningly wrong with this picture.

Remain calm Comrade Maynard,
We, the unruly masses, can't wait to live in a land where permission must be granted by other nations before we can eat our junk food or heat our homes as we see fit. When Premier Baracknik seizes power he will swell the government with Thermostatisticians who will regulate our comfort zones and with Commissaryits who will inspect our Cossacklunches and determine whether we’ve Soviet too much. We, the proletariat, once we have signed our free will over to the government, will march blithely in lockstep as we follow our new world orders. All hail the Politburobama. And remember, Freedom’s just another word for everything left to lose.

ALL totalitarianism comes from the left. Obama's vicious vision is no different, except he chooses to make sure that no one in the world, if he can help it, is ever comfortable. His "vision" will consign all people of color in the world to misery, early death from starvation and disease, and no hope of ever seeing a better life. He is the most anti-black, anti-immigrant, anti-Asian, anti-Latino,anti-human candidate in the race, although he is followed closely by Billary. And he covers his BS in the milk chocolate of "changing Washington" and expects people to pronounce it yummy.

You are not kooky. You are someone who enjoys the freedom of being who you are. Barry and Michele are what THEY are; elitists, phonies, and power seekers. Academic smarts do not make people infallible in deciding how people should live their lives - and no doubt both the Obamas have academic smarts - but Ivy League credentials don't automatically make them leaders.

By the way, if I hear Barry state again how his grandfather served this country, I may just puke. He is NOT his grandfather. Barry did not serve his country in the military and his efforts to portray patriotism by frequently mentioning his grandfather's service is disgusting. There are many of us veterans who feel that the president of the United States, and therefore the Commander-In-Chief of the armed services, should have also served in the military as a prerequisite to being the leader of the free world. How can one justify sending troops to die in combat without ever having served himself or herself.

To paraphrase a recent Star Wars Movie: this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause.

Everyone in High School should be required to read "Escape from Freedom" by Erich Fromm. It really opened my eyes and I read it in college (so much for being indoctrinated into liberalism, right?).

It frightened me when I heard the CA Energy Commission considering putting in thermostats that they could control. It did my heart good to hear that it didn't get much further than a random idea.

Maybe there is hope. I hope.

You're right to be afraid. One thing the left isn't about and that's making the lives of the little people better. And by the way, we are the little people unless you're a Soros or Kerry or Kennedy. Basically, this is another scam by Democrats to mooch off the sweat of your brow and suck the blood from your body and marrow from your bones. Democrat = Liberal = thief in most basic terms. This theft is in the name of the helping the poor, or the children or some other victim demographic. What they don't tell you is they reach in your pocket and spend 80 cents out of every dollar on themselves in "administrative costs and fees". Then steal 19 out of the remaining 20 cents. Anytime somebody wants to use the force of government to extract the fruits of the labor of the populace they must extract 1000 times more than it would actually cost because the people running that government are going line their pockets with 999 times the cost of what ever it being attempted.

Maynard, you are a kook and I do mock you...but you are the GOOD kind of kook that doesn't attempt to ram your kookiness down the throats of those disagreeing with you...unlike the fascistic Obama, a very bad kook indeed.
