France FM: We are in touch with Hamas; group confirms informal contact

PARIS - France said on Monday it had held talks with Hamas, in an apparent softening of its support for the U.S.-led policy of isolating the Palestinian Islamist group that seized control of the Gaza Strip last year.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner confirmed a report in the French daily Le Figaro quoting a retired ambassador who it said had met senior Hamas officials about a month ago. "It would be difficult to deny it since the man who is in touch with them has spoken," Kouchner told Europe 1 radio. "Having contacts is necessary. We had some before the invasion [takeover by Hamas] of Gaza," he added.

Is Sarko just keeping in line with the new Obama Administration? He is after all a Frenchmen. They think Obama will win and want what's good for France even if they have to shake hands with Hitler.

We know that France would not have done this without the 'wink' of the US and that is what makes me sad Tammy. What happens to our Administrations that they treat the Mideast like their own personal mountain to climb toward the end of their respective terms? When does the principle leave them and the urge for legacy kick in?
Seems it is always about the money, doesn't it? That and pride to the determent of those they represent..Thanks for the story Tammy..I think..UGH.

even before WW 2 and the Vichy government, france had a plan to send all her jews to the island of madagascar. just like she watched her jewish WW1 vets, begging for mercy, medals in hand, be sent off to the gas chambers of eastern europe .i am french . part of my family was jewish . this grieves me to no end. i can't help but see a pattern emerge, so common to most of europe, i suppose, of aligning oneself with about the closest thing to real old skool kill all the damn jews freakin' hitler Nazis there is-woman hating, baby killing , anti-Semitic Islamonazis. it's downright pathological how european governments and many americans- all of whom should right well know better- side with the voices of intolerant hatred and proven track records of genocide over the outrageous concepts of democracy and civil rights for everyone and the idea that you shouldn't be murdered because of the religion or race or gender or sexual orientation you were born into. some of us came to america to get away from the ghosts of hitler and the centuries long attempts of so many to destroy the jews of europe. now we get to hear glib self satisfied buppies talk about extending that hand of understanding and comfort to those who'd love nothing better than to nuke israel and america off the face of the let's go green earth. some would benefit from the knowledge that iran in farsi means ' land of the aryans' and where i come from that doesn't just exclude the jews. one of the few palestinian 'honor killings' in america involved a father and plo operative who murdered his daughter because she was dating a black boy.

the ayatollah khomeini orchestrated the revolution in iran from paris france where he spent part of his exile. but the shah, who tried to drag the country screaming into at least the 19th century and forced women's suffrage on the 12th century backward whack jobs , was infinitely more evil simply because he was backed by the US then the man responsible for founding the lethal iran we are confronted with today. but that's la belle france- pick the fascist jew killers and homosexual hangers every time.

France insists they did not have relations with that group, Hamas. We get the picture. How do you say "knee pads" in French?

Kouchner played down the talks between France and Hamas.
"They are not relations. They are contacts," he said.
