Afghanistan is flaring up and may very well become the quagmire everyone warned about. Saved by Patraeus after a botched first couple of years, we’re keeping our fingers crossed Iraq won’t fall apart the minute we leave. North Korea flipped us the finger on nukes. Iran too. Russia is eager to be our nemesis again as soon as oil prices go back up. That meeting in Annapolis didn’t bring peace to the Middle East after all. China has all our money and holds our IOUs. The economy is in the tank. The country is in the hands of loony left Democrats. But who cares, G.W. is leaving office protecting a few remote Pacific Islands. Not from the Chinese, from fisherman and drillers. The man who wants to be remembered for not selling his soul to be popular has just made environmentalists very happy.
Bush set to protect Pacific islands
President Bush plans to designate three remote Pacific island chains as national monuments in what will be the largest marine conservation effort in history. The president’s action will prohibit the destruction and extraction of natural resources from the areas, Mrs. Perino said, adding that the designation will not conflict with U.S. military activities or freedom of navigation.
The move also will boost the environmental record of a president who has been criticized for not doing enough against air pollution and global warming.
If the monument is smaller than we asked then that is OK,” Agnes McPhetres, vice chair of the [Friends of the Monument] group, said. “We still applaud President Bush for taking the first step.”
Smaller than we asked. There’s your legacy.
