Federal Deficit

A post by Maynard

This graph, taken from this Wall Street Journal article, shows what we’re up against. It’s a crime beyond imagination against the American people.

This monster is not of Obama’s creation. It’s a product of long-term rot and corruption; the consequence of fools and demagogues pandering to the lowest common denominator, promising ever-more goodies to an ever-needier mob.

For a brief moment, I hoped the shock of the current crisis would bring an element of reality to the debate in Washington. Certainly Obama would do the right thing. Not because he wanted to, you understand, but because he had no choice. I thought the nation had reached that late stage of addiction where the addict has hit bottom, and finally faces his issues head-on.

I stand corrected. We haven’t hit bottom yet, but Obama is working on that. His “stimulus” package may become our final binge. What Reagan did to the Soviet Union, Obama is now arranging for us.

This is only the beginning. The aging of the baby boomers puts us at the tip of a demographic precipice. The existing unfunded commitments will, in coming years, strike with a vengeance. Outflow from Social Security and Medicare are on schedule to consume a greater portion of the GNP than the entire current Federal budget.

(George Bush tried to initiate an intelligent discussion about how we would deal with the coming Social Security crunch. The Democrats took it as an opportunity to accuse him of heinous crimes against old people, bringing the dialogue to a quick and fruitless end. As usual, political opportunism trumped saving the nation.)

I hope I’m wrong in my dire projections. But the numbers speak for themselves.

The thing that is truly sad is, Obama is absolutely convinced that what he’s doing IS the right thing.

LNTHOMP, I must correct you. He’s convinced the teleprompter is telling him to do the right thing.

I get so ticked at my pay stub every time I look at SS and medicare. I have my own darn insurance and I’ll never be able to collect on SS. I’m only twenty-two so I have to stare at the hole in my paycheck longer and harder than you older folks.

Vladamir I. Lenin would be very proud of Obama and, as a student of Communism, Obama knows it. Power through victimhood is the tool he is using. Because he has the “bully pulpit” he gets to direct the revenge however misplaced it will be. Remember, if you’re a victim and you hope for relief (government relief), the flip side of hope is vengeance. On whom do victims take their revenge? On their oppressors.

For further inspiration on whom to blame, see speeches by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and company. For 20 years Obama found spiritual comfort and sactuary in the bossom of Jeremiah Wright’s den of haters.

This is truly the Generational Theft Act of 2009. Too bad our government couldn’t be prosecuted for all of the corruption and crime against the American people.

KMH, I agree – we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Does anyone remember during the Reagan years when President Reagan increased the national debt as a result of the massive upgrades to our military after our disastrous display of our military prowess by President Carter when our helicopters crashed in the desert in a vain attempt to free our hostages?

All we heard from Democrats at that time was “the deficit, the Deficit, the DEFICIT! We’re mortgaging our children’s future!”

You would have thought that the sky was falling.

Where are those “chicken little” cries today from liberal Democrats (and 3 RINO Republicans)? The “chicken little” cries today from liberal Democrats is “spend, Spend, SPEND or else the sky will fall”!

This monstrous deficit increase pales in comparison to what President Reagan did. Expanding the military and implementing huge tax cuts resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, the end of a major threat to America, massive increases to the treasury, and huge economic prosperity for Americans.

I can’t imagine what the result of this spending spree will be.

Maynard– The graph you posted is an official graph. It is bogus. The national debt rose(above and beyond accruing interest) each year through the Clinton years, because he used a little trickery to make expenses dissapear. It’s called holding expendetures “off budget”. It is supposed to be for “one-time” expendetures that will be curtailed within one budget cycle. Technically it is anything that will not require spending over more than one budget cycle. The money is approved and spent, and is not included in the buget. As we know, Clinton was a man that could get very technical with a technicality.

Clinton started putting all sorts of spending in this category, even though the spending went on year after year. The difference is that Clinton never asked for these items to be included in the budget. He just asked for and recieved year-to-year financing from congress. Since the financing expired within one budget cycle, it was held off-budget.

Bush put the tool on steroids. The entire trillion dollar war in Iraq and Afganistan is off budget, along with numerous other expendetures. We are running record deficits even with the liberal use of this tool. The trick is to hold any expense off budget that you are sure your opposition will not dare withdraw funding for year after year, such as “no child left behind”. Medicare part-D is another unfunded liability that will recieve annual requests for suppliments, off-budget infusions that no politician in his right mind would vote against.

So there we have it. The big “cram-down”. The 800 pound gorilla that will eventually ravage us all.
