In deference to the Obama family, Ty Inc. retired Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia, the dolls that were absolutely positively not named after the Obama girls.

Sasha and Malia dolls ‘retired’

The dolls, first called Marvelous Malia and Sweet Sasha, will now be named Marvelous Mariah and Sweet Sydney.

Dollmaker Ty Inc says it changed the monikers in deference to the Obama family after Mrs Obama said that using her daughters’ names was inappropriate.

It had said the dolls were not modelled on the first daughters, but the names suited dolls they were already making. But the company’s website now profiles the Marvelous Malia and Sweet Sasha dolls under a red banner that reads, “Retired.”

Profits from sales of the original dolls will be donated to charity.

The suggested retail price for each doll was $9.99. The retired duo is going for $170 on ebay. Profits most likely not going to charity. Maybe Ty can work its own angle on controversial Obama-related names “taken off the shelf”. Take-a-Taxi Tom (Daschle), Bribe Me Bill (Richardson), No Distraction Nancy (Killefer).

S is for Soviet, satellite and Sasha.
M is for Malaysia, Malia and most likely not from Latin.
