John McCain appeared on Face the Nation today. He spoke of America’s historical moral obligation to condemn the Iranian government and support the Iranian demonstrators. Three cheers for McCain.
He readily admits there is little else we can do but lend moral support, but we should, at the very least, do that. Later in the interview McCain said Obama has “done well” as President in his first five months, but he put it in the context of getting his legislation passed. With the help of a few Republicans, McCain noted.

And yes, on CNN when asked by John King, Sen. Lugar did say if the Iranians asked us to sit down right now for a talk, we should do it without regard to what’s happening in the streets of Tehran. Lugar thought it was highly unlikely we’d be asked because the Iranian government is unstable right now.
So, the government is unstable but if asked we should negotiate with them. I suppose Lugar wouldn’t even mind having the conference in a building overlooking a street where demonstrators are being shot.
We were blessed to have great leaders in our history. We desperately need some now.
I saw Zbigniew Brzezinski on Fareed Zakaria today say Obama struck the perfect balance and shouldn’t push against the regime anymore so we can avoid a showdown. Shameful. This is what the wizened foreign policy experts think?
I interned for Dick Lugar when I was an undergrad, but his foreign policy “realism” has been getting worse and worse. I wonder if Mitch Daniels would be interested in talking him into early retirement…or in a primary challenge if not.
Sadly, this is one reason (of many) why Senator Lugar has been such a letdown since I voted for him in 2006.
Obama. Biden. Pelosi. Reid. Lugar. Snowe. Specter. Collins. Graham.
I used to believe that we got the government that we deserved, but take a look at the above partial list of our leaders! Nobody deserves that bunch! I am seriously considering the theory that God must hate us.
Dick Lugar has become his first name.
He is part of the many problems in DC due to the fact he’s been there entirely too long. I worked with his campaign in the 80′s when I was a young adult in Indy. For quite some time, Lugar has appeared to be losing his senses each time his mouth opens.
I agree w/ Dave J that Mitch Daniels should give Lugar a challenge, but Daniels is doing a good job for Indiana right now. Even Indianapolis is a much more vibrant, modern and entertaining city now as opposed to just 5,6 years ago.
What I would actually love to see is Mike Pence pose a challenge to Lugar’s seat. Pence is becoming a more solid voice – and a conservative one, too. If I remember correctly, he was the first voice of opposition to the bail-outs and made the comment about the rush to bail-out was the equivalent of a used car salesman’s pushy behavior for a sale.
It’s usually the case in the throws of frustration that we get smog from the fossiled fools of Congress. One element reaches for the ring of jingoism, another swings to legal arguments and the prudent wait for an outcomes.
When I first heard that Lugar was serving as a mentor for Obama when the latter was running for President, I pictured him drooling down his tie and functioning on prescriptions of Medijuana. He’s gone.
Fareed Zakaria, Islamic apologist ‘ad summam absurdam’, interviewing Carter’s National Security Advisor, Brzezinski, parallels Cornwallis telling his grandchildren how heroically he got his surviving troops home after the American Revolution.
John McCain has done well in supporting the will of the Iranian people’s right to self-determination. And what else can we do (Well, in the open)?
But, we know that in only less than six months the Celebrity in Chief, will watch for the least untoward results and claim his role in keeping things from turning tragic. Leadership from the back of the book.
But now, I must make reference to, and imply from, recent words we’ve all heard or read.
“So let me say this as clearly as I can — the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam,” (*within which [warfare] could be seen subversion, espionage, sedition [heresy of individual rights]).
And the man who spoke those words in his Turkey Trot Tour, has since referred deferentially to the “Islamic Republic of Iran” is Barack Obama. He even announced, not only to us, The Citizens Of The United States, but the rest of the world, that we are now also a Muslim nation; and no longer a Christian nation. (Needless to cite what can be accomplished by minority lawsuits and dsicrimination claims – not to mention a baffle them with bullshit election.)
Fact; Iran is Islam.
Thus Obama’s Islamic United States will not be at war (*above) with another Islamic nation. Such is “harem”.
Thus; Obama’s Islamic United States will not interfere in any adverse way another Islamic nation.
(And, as we’ve noticed, our new brothers and sisters of the Umah aren’t commenting either.)
Agreed, Artgal: Pence would be fantastic.
Come on people, lets vote out these incumbent, life appointed tenure thinking, wet noodle backbone, senators. We got better people than these milk toast people. Come on! Is it because of tenure, power, and pork that you don’t get rid of these low lives? Come on people, don’t you get sick of seeing these people ruining our country? We aren’t getting the government we pay for. This government is getting too big, too powerful, and too stupid!! We need fresh conservatives up in congress, not these fossils! Please people, is it worth the power and the pork you get with these flakes and then have to deal with their crap?!Come on my fellow citizens, lets clean both houses!!! We also need to clean out the bureaucrats and the lobbyists!!!
Let’s see what three US presidents have said in times of crisis when freedom was at stake:
“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”–John F. Kennedy, 1961 inaugural address
“The Polish nation, speaking through Solidarity, has provided one of the brightest, bravest moments of modern history. The people of Poland are giving us an imperishable example of courage and devotion to the values of freedom in the face of relentless opposition. Left to themselves, the Polish people would enjoy a new birth of freedom. But there are those who oppose the idea of freedom, who are intolerant of national independence, and hostile to the European values of democracy and the rule of law.
Two Decembers ago, freedom was lost in Afghanistan; this Christmas, it’s at stake in Poland. But the torch of liberty is hot. It warms those who hold it high. It burns those who try to extinguish it.
–Ronald Reagan, 1981 during the Polish uprising in Gdansk.
“It’s not productive given the history of U.S.-Iranian relations to be seen as meddling.‖Barack Obama, June 2009 deadly Iranian election protests
Boy that last quote really is inspirational. That’ll encourage the Iranian protesters to keep fighting for their freedom…Yeah right!
God help them. God help us.
