Ladies and gentlemen, there has been a Divine intervention. I missed it myself. Probably others as well so thank heavens Mark Sanford has taken the trouble to explain it to us.

You see, his tragic “misfortune” is one of those mysterious ways in which God often works. The point of it all was to enlighten the Governor on how to better approach things like school spending. God controls how these things work out and now Mark is in on the plan. He was off just a tiny bit it seems because he needs to make only a few alterations in his approach to achieve a more productive legislative session.

Mark apologizes because humbling is part of the purification process. God has given us a better father, husband, friend and advocate. Maybe even more. Sanford says he feels as though he was at his own funeral. Which must mean he is now arisen. God has such an ironic sense of humor. ;)

Gov. Mark Sanford: I apologize for letting people down

It is true that I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels, but equally true is the fact that God can make good of our respective wrongs in life. In this vein, while none of us has the chance to attend our own funeral, in many ways I feel like I was at my own in the past weeks, and surprisingly I am thankful for the perspective it has afforded.

If you ever have the misfortune of being at this point, whether self-induced as in my case or not, it will give you an indeed amazing perspective on life and on what really matters…

I’ve been humbled and broken as never before in my life and as a consequence have given up areas of control in a way that I never have before, and it is my belief that this will make me a better father, husband, friend and advocate.

I’ve realized that as much as I have and will continue to advocate for things ranging from restructuring to responsible spending to school choice, my approach needs to be less about my will and more about looking for ways to more humbly present the greater principles and ideas at play. It needs to be less strident and more about finding ways to work with legislative leaders to advance the ideas so many of us believe in. It means less time fighting the tide, and a greater awareness of the fact that God controls it. In working with a few alterations to my approach, I think this could be a far more productive last session than the one that would have been had the tragedy that has unfolded not occurred, and in turn, people’s lives can be made better.

I’d try to stay out of thunderstorms if I were the Governor.

The human capacity for spin is endless. It may get you pretty far in some circles, but ultimately we’re fated to face the Judge that’s not so easily hornswoggled.

He may be telling the truth. Who cares about his political career, I care about the man and his family. Take out the last pargraph (which is spin). What you have left is the result of a run-in-the-mill conversion/redemption story. If he has “hit bottom” and has had a true conversion experience (or a pyschotic break, who cares), the good news is he will be a different person and his family will have a chance. If this is all spin, well, then he is lost in a very sick way and with him may go his family. So I have to hope he is telling the truth.

You are a very kind-hearted person. If he is telling the truth, I believe it is the self-serving, self-forgiving truth of a narcissist at the moment his name and career are in jeopardy. These epiphanies are usually short-lived.

He casts himself as the recipient of a misfortune which was planned by God in order to make him a better person and governor. In a way it was God’s plan, not really his own, to get on a plane and go to Argentina to commit adultery. He is now the instrument through which the people of South Carolina will be the beneficiaries of a God-touched governor.

God’s plan certainly coincides well with Mark Sanford’s plans except for the getting caught part.

Sanford says he needs to make a “few alterations to (his) approach.” I guess if your recent approach has been to screw your constituents, your family, and a South American stripper all at the same time on a range of levels then yeah, a “few alterations” might be called for. A good start might be to SHUT UP and disappear yourself, loser. Geez.
