The approach of the federal government is increasingly autocratic. Dictate executive pay. Smother industry with cap and trade. Censor speech with hate crimes legislation. Those are but a few examples of the growing sense of uncontrolled power coming out of Washington.
The latest example is the government’s version of health care “cost cutting”. The targets are The Rich, health care providers and your life. The government’s method of “cost cutting” is to wrap their omnipotent hands around the target and squeeze.
Health-Care Plans Fail to Curtail Spending, CBO Says
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today signaled that her chamber may scale back a proposed a tax on the wealthiest Americans after the idea drew fire from Republicans and members of her own party. The plan called for a surtax on annual incomes of more than $350,000 that graduated to a 5.4 percent surtax on couples making more than $1 million a year.
The government may be able to trim costs in the system enough to reduce the tax, Pelosi said.
“If we can get more savings, we can perhaps lower the percentage that the high end will pay,†Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters at a press briefing in the Capitol today. “To the extent we get the cooperation of those who want to squeeze in the system, we can do less on the tax side.â€
Wouldn’t it be great if private households could cut costs by putting the squeeze on the system: grocers, utilities, retailers, etc.? We have to save our pennies by foregoing things that are discretionary. Let an imperial government get its hands on the health care system and your life will be considered discretionary. You won’t be worth two cents.
