“Cash for Clunkers”

Tammy spoke of the “Cash for Clunkers” program. I think the topic is worthy of a highlight, in that it exemplifies everything that’s insanely wrong with the trend of our economic “recovery” programs. (I’m going to be lazy and skip citations for this post, because I don’t think they’re necessary. You know what I’m talking about; the news is full of it.)

The idea of “Cash for Clunkers” is to encourage auto sales while ridding the highway of gas guzzlers. The government sweetens the pot with a few billion dollars (borrowed from China, to be repaid by your grandchildren), and everyone does the right thing. The economy improves, we use less oil, life is beautiful. Who could argue with that?

Okay, first of all, I’ve previously rejected the premise that we can “stimulate” (that is, “consume”) our way back to prosperity. America’s fundamental problem is we’re out of balance: Too much consumption, too little production, too few dollars saved and invested. This imbalance is bridged by imports and borrowing, which leads to a debt bubble. Bubbles always deflate sooner or later; the best you can hope for (and work for) is a gradual easing rather than a catastrophic burst.

It’s terribly ironic to see the candidate who promised “change” has nothing to offer but more of the same bad policies that made the mess in the first place. Borrowing money to fuel a consumption binge, while it may provide a small and temporary restoration of business as usual, actually adds fuel to the long-term problem.

Consider what “Cash for Clunkers” is supposed to accomplish. In a nutshell, the goal is to take working cars and trash them. Doesn’t that sound just a little bit weird when you think about it? The nation is hurting economically, so we take some of our stuff and destroy it, on the theory that we’ll become more prosperous by rebuilding the stuff that we intentionally demolished. If that makes sense, then the 9/11 terrorists did us a hell of a favor by knocking down buildings. Gosh, think of all the construction jobs they generated! Maybe we should bomb our own buildings as part of the restoration program.

Our leaders are hailing “Cash for Clunkers” as a triumph, and auto sales have picked up a notch. But that’s not surprising. The government’s essentially giving away free money; it’s no surprise the funds were immediately exhausted. But hey, there’s always more where that came from. If our grandkids are now broke, we can move on to our great-grandkids.

Okay, so in a time of hardship, the nation is squandering its remaining wealth. But at least it’s green, right? If we’re beggaring ourselves, isn’t it for a green planet?

No it’s not! Dammit, the greenest thing you can do with a clunker is to keep it running. It takes a *lot* of resources to build a new car, and relatively few resources to keep a good car running. So you’re actively harming the environment by trashing a working car and building another…even if the new car gets better mileage. The “green” thing to do is to nurse your car along, and maybe try to drive it less. When your clunker car has reached the end of its life and you’re contemplating a new purchase…that’s the time to think “green”.

The foregoing is basic economics and common sense. But not enough people see what’s happening because the programs are complicated, and they sound wonderful and noble on the surface. So we let the insane fools lead us because too many people are scratching their heads and figuring something ought to be done, and this plan sounds almost reasonable.

I don’t know what else to say. Our political leadership, in a time of crisis, has chosen the path of economic and ecological suicide, not to mention child sacrifice.

Beautiful piece, Maynard. I love my Lefty friends, but their blind defense of this program (“It’s single-handedly saving the auto industry!!”…yeah, right) is insane. If GWB had put up some idiotic plan like this they would have added it to their well-worn laundry list of reasons why he was the anti-Christ. Since The Chosen One came up with this “idea”, it’s (naturally) sheer brilliance.

You’re the only one I’ve seen with a slightly different take on this shinola Maynard, and I agree. I’d also like to take it a step further and say I don’t think Cash for Clunkers has anything to do with going green. The Statists running our government may be marketing it that way, but I think it’s more about getting us all in cars with that have the GPS tracking device. It’s all about controlling us. Sound a little too black helicoper-tish? Well, so does the idea that they want to control over our life and death, but that’s the goal with “health care” reform.

Also, Cash for Clunker is identical to the cash for guns programs that the Left loves so much. All the guns turned in are destroyed. Evil guns, evil cars. Manbearpig must be very happy.

If Maynard’s expertly written post isn’t enough for you, check this visual out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waj2KrKYTZo

This perfectly fine car is being DESTROYED, just so some loser can get a car that probably only gets FOUR miles per gallon more, and so they could get $4,500 that DOESNT REALLY EXIST (the Treasury’s printing presses are probably running 24/7 to print all this cash out of thin air. Can you say inflation?) from Daddy Government.

Why can’t we at least salvage the engine and parts that are worth a lot of money, so they can be reused or recycled? Aren’t the green zombies all about recycling? Why can’t we have them donated to CHARITY?

Should not you be trying to keep your existing car running as long as you can? Remember, cars today are MUCH MUCH cleaner than even 20 years ago. The notion that they’re these hugely noxious polluting deathtraps is simply not true. All the resources used to implement this insane program to destroy perfectly good cars and put out new ones do not make up for getting 4 MPG more.

This makes as much sense as the Earth Liberation Front setting fire to a lot of Hummers. That sure is nice and peachy for the air quality, isn’t it? Morons.

A recent commenter here on a previous post did the math for this whole debacle, you should check it out. It’s in the members only comments ( http://is.gd/20InJ ). This is your Obama government for you…

I was at the car dealer on Saturday to get some manufacturer recommended service done. There was much talk about the Cash for Clunkers program. I asked one person who was there to get a new car, “If these morons in Washington budget a plan like this to last 3 months into November, and they run out of money in FOUR days, and they claim it’s a success, be VERY AFRAID what they are planning on doing for your healthcare.”

No response from the car welfare recipient.

Watched the video. Total insanity! Destroying perfectly good cars for no reason.
When people in my family started talking about taking their cars in (they didn’t know all the details of the plan) I was the only one to object… strongly. Just on principle alone, it’s wrong!

bread and circuses. bread and circuses.

it’s a ham handed stupid little pay off to the stupid little people to make them shut the f’ up, take back a few of their own tax dollars, a pittance compared to the pay offs to lobbyists, companies and special interest groups, shut up and take the rest of what urkel is shoveling. throw up a veil of tears that says it’s to save all the cute bunnies in the forest and the polar bears and another Omiracle has saved us and the whole world from evil americans . meanwhile the ruling class is giving billion dollar handouts and presenting forced consumers of health’ care’ in captivity to all the huge companies that helped put them into office.

i’m just waiting for them to open the vomitoriums at the white house, break out the togas, spark up the dancing slave girls and start partying like it’s the decline and fall of the roman empire circa Caligula. instead of fighting for our lives against the lions tigers and bears in the Coliseum we’ll be surrendering our lives in the government mandated suicide programs when we’re too bloody old or too sick to be of any good to the state.

the other gross part of this is that many charities use the ‘tax write off for clunker’ for fund raising. it’s quite popular and they suffer in the face of this wasteful bit of fluff. but screw those blind kids and people with incurable genetic diseases…. just more selfish over consuming americans who will have their place , let me be clear, in obama death care…
