California is always looking for ways to harass and criminalize decent gun-owners. Concerned Californians should contact their State Senator in protest of AB962. Here’s the word from the NRA:

Bill to Restrict Ammunition Sales Amended

Please Continue Contacting Your State Senator in Opposition!

On Friday, during consideration of Assembly Bill 962, the California Senate amended AB962 to remove some of the more outrageous provisions of the bill in an effort to make it easier to pass. Despite these amendments, AB962 remains a serious threat to the rights of California’s law-abiding gun owners. It is critical that you continue contacting your State Senator to voice your opposition to this bill. AB962 could be voted on by the Senate as early as tomorrow, Wednesday, September 9.

The Senate removed a requirement that ammunition retailers be licensed to sell ammunition. In addition, the bill would no longer prohibit the private transfer of more than 50 rounds of ammunition during a 30 day period.

Despite these changes to the bill, AB962 is still unacceptable and represents a dire threat to our ability to exercise our Second Amendment rights. Ammunition retailers would still have to store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers. The bill still requires that individuals purchasing ammunition be fingerprinted at the time of sale, mandates that dealers keep these records and make them available for inspection by the Department of Justice. Finally, mail order ammunition sales are still prohibited under AB962.

Please contact your State Senator IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urge them to oppose AB962. Contact information can be found here.

FWIW, this is what I sent to my Senator. This isn’t a work of art, and that probably doesn’t matter, because they don’t read these things beyond maybe the first few words.

PLEASE OPPOSE AB962. This bill, currently under consideration, is, according to reports, being “improved”. It is nevertheless UNACCEPTABLE, in that it would merely serve to harass and criminalize decent law-abiding citizens, while it would do nothing to impede true criminals. AB962 is inappropriate and counter-productive.

As a personal matter, I can tell you that AB962 would cause me, as a point of honor, to seek out-of-state retailers for the relevant purchases. The California legislature has already passed far too many laws that have the practical effect of driving business from our state to adjacent jurisdictions. With the current economic downturn being particularly severe in California, it would be unwise to encourage the exodus.

I oppose this bill. This is not about public safety, or denying criminals ammunition. It is about making the ownership of firearms as inconvenient as possible, restricting anything to do with firearms, and the firearms themselves until most people will say it’s not worth it to own one. It is about denying people their rights, and their personal safety. I think it is a shame that many in the legislature simply dismiss our constitution as a quaint relic of no practical value. I have been looking at land in Nevada. If AB 962 passes, I believe it will open the door for more restrictions, such as banning all semi-autos, first handguns, and then rifles. The next step will be all handguns, and “repeating” rifles. It won’t end until they allow only single shot shotguns, and single shot rifles. AB962 is another step. This step will preciptate my exit from this state. Can California stand to lose another upper middle-class combined income? Many liberals just say that some other Californian will get my job. Think so? My job will go with me. Sorry. Please stop this bill. Thanks for listening.
