International reporters were not allowed in the area of fighting where the Tamil Tigers were defeated. There were large numbers of civilian casualties and suspicion of war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army. A few weeks ago a video of executions was aired on the UK Channel 4 TV station. It shows what appears to be members of the military killing blindfolded, naked civilians. Channel 4 says the video was taken by a soldier with a mobile phone. The Sri Lankan government claims the video is fake. The UN called for an independent investigation to determine the authenticity. To bolster the government claim, an editorial writer...

Politics, unions and wiping rear ends

Pat Quinn signed an executive order in June allowing collective bargaining by “individual providers of home-based support services.” Now caretakers of sick relatives are receiving phone calls and unannounced visits to their homes from union reps. SEIU and AFSCME are competing to sign up these people who never asked for collective bargaining. Unions say they have met the minimum requirements of interest to hold an election. If the SEIU or AFSCME receive enough votes, those who voted not to join a union will have to pay “fair share’ dues. The unions promise they can increase the monthly stipend for these caregivers. On the one hand, the man from Camelot, the “Loin of the Senate”, gave us this gruesome scene on the left. Then there was the young man on the right who regularly took a summer job as a lifeguard. The front page of the “Dixon Daily Telegraph” of August 3, 1928 credited him with saving a drowning man. In seven summers of work, he pulled 77 people from the water. I think you know who I’m talking about.

Colorado is the only state in which less than 20% of the population is obese. Obesity is not evil. Plenty of wonderful people are carrying a few extra pounds. But being overweight is not a virtue. My general philosophy is I want people to have personal freedom to choose (i.e., the “liberty” thing); I also want them to make the “right” choices.
