A Saturday Night News Update

1940sreporterTwo things of interest peeps: looks like there will be charges filed against Balloon Boy dad. I guess the sheriff decided their first ‘body language’ assessment that it wasn’t a hoax was wrong. Maybe it was the laughter and frowning body language of the rest of us that gave them a clue.

Charges expected in Colorado balloon case

Authorities in Colorado say criminal charges are expected to be filed against Richard Heene, a storm-chasing father whose giant Mylar balloon ascended into the sky earlier this week, sparking fears that his 6-year-old was aboard. “We do anticipate at some point in the future, there will be some criminal charges filed with regards to this incident,” Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said…If the incident was a hoax, the only charge local authorities could press would be making a false report to authorities — a Class 3 misdemeanor, Alderden told reporters Saturday.

However, a misdemeanor “hardly seems serious enough given the circumstances,” the sheriff said.

“We certainly want to talk to FAA officials and federal officials to see if perhaps there aren’t additional federal charges that would be more appropriate in the circumstances than what we’re able to do locally,” he said.

And as they say in other news, not surprisingly I suppose, Roman Polanski has been released from prison for “medical reasons.” Really? Did someone drug and rape him?

Polanski out of jail for medical reasons

Roman Polanski has been moved from his Zurich jail for medical treatment, his French lawyer said Saturday.

The film director was arrested in September after nearly 32 years in self-imposed exile from the United States following his conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

“All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don’t know where he is or when he will be returned to prison,” Herve Temime told Reuters…The move comes in the wake of public comments by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has criticized the U.S. justice system for arresting Polanski.

“I understand that people are shocked by the gravity of the accusations against Roman Polanski,” Sarkozy told newspaper Le Figaro’s website on Friday.

“But I add that it is not a good administration of justice to do this 32 years after the facts when the person concerned is today 76 years old.”

So let me see if I understand this–the longer you evade justice and the older you get the more you should be rewarded for your criminal behavior? Great. What a disappointment, but Sarkozy is, in the end French.

French he is. Too bad. I thought he might be better than Chirac. Polanski is a creep. As far as I am concerned, he robbed the cradle when he married Sharon Tate. Woody Allen another cradle robber and pervert is standing by Polanski. They are sick!

I agree with you that Polanski is a creep but he didn’t rob the cradle when he got married to Sharon Tate. She was 25 when she tied the knot with Polanski in early 1968. That’s a long way from the cradle.

Sarkozy IS better than Chirac. But, um, that’s really not saying much, now is it?

well, we’re not all child raping freaks you know…. really. and we decriminalized homosexual acts in france in 1791. sodomy is still on the criminal codes in many states in the USA.

i offer no excuses and have no sympathy for polanski- who is a child raping criminal who deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his life. but the sarkozy/ general french view of him has a basis in the history of consent laws in france. the age of consent there has been 15 for some time and statutory rape was directly defined with a specific jail time in the penal code. in the late 70’s there was a big public push to remove the statutory clause and allow for “decriminalization of ‘ consenting relationships’ between adults and minors”. of course it was mostly artists and writers who added their names to the sundry letters to editors and petitions to legalize child rape. artists and writers – always the best friends to the exploitation of women and children. anyway, in france as in most of europe there is a tendency to see these things as non criminal behaviors and to see americans as uptight religiously motivated prudes who just do not understand ‘ love’ or art. it’s twisted but support of polanski in this light makes sense.

as an aside, tammy has mentioned leaders who aren’t jewish and included sarkozy- but he’s actually part sephardic jew on his mother’s side. members of his extended family perished in the holocaust.

On your show yesterday, you said regarding Thaddeus McCotter and the HAPPY Act that even good people do something screwed up. I guess this is Sarkozy’s screw-up.

And if Polanski has a medical issue so severe it requires him to be released from prison, how was it OK for him to travel to Switzerland in the first place?

6 Dave J. October 18, 2009 at 10:08 pm

As someone who works in the criminal justice system, I’d remind you that sometimes people’s medical problems start AFTER they go to jail. Jail isn’t generally a very nice place, probably not even in Switzerland. And he’s almost certainly still legally in custody in a secure wing of some hospital.

I guess you’re right, and I’m sure there are illnesses that can develop once in custody that wouldn’t have otherwise. But in the case of Polanski, considering what a flight risk he is, I found a bit of conspiracy in his illness much like Tammy did with the Lockerbie bomber.

Great! How much of the tax payers money is going to be wasted making sure a Class 3 misdemeanor conviction sticks to Heene. I guess the police need to CYA to sate the media’s demand for justice! I wonder who will get the Pulitzer for exposing this atrocity? As for Polanski, the phrase self-imposed exile says it all in that travesty.

It’s not going to be just misdemeanors. He caused a ground stoppage at a major airport: the FAA is going to refer this to the FBI for a federal criminal investigation.
