well, we're not all child raping freaks you know.... really. and we decriminalized homosexual acts in france in 1791. sodomy is still on the criminal codes in many states in the USA.

i offer no excuses and have no sympathy for polanski- who is a child raping criminal who deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his life. but the sarkozy/ general french view of him has a basis in the history of consent laws in france. the age of consent there has been 15 for some time and statutory rape was directly defined with a specific jail time in the penal code. in the late 70's there was a big public push to remove the statutory clause and allow for "decriminalization of ' consenting relationships' between adults and minors". of course it was mostly artists and writers who added their names to the sundry letters to editors and petitions to legalize child rape. artists and writers - always the best friends to the exploitation of women and children. anyway, in france as in most of europe there is a tendency to see these things as non criminal behaviors and to see americans as uptight religiously motivated prudes who just do not understand ' love' or art. it's twisted but support of polanski in this light makes sense.

as an aside, tammy has mentioned leaders who aren't jewish and included sarkozy- but he's actually part sephardic jew on his mother's side. members of his extended family perished in the holocaust.

I guess you're right, and I'm sure there are illnesses that can develop once in custody that wouldn't have otherwise. But in the case of Polanski, considering what a flight risk he is, I found a bit of conspiracy in his illness much like Tammy did with the Lockerbie bomber.

As someone who works in the criminal justice system, I'd remind you that sometimes people's medical problems start AFTER they go to jail. Jail isn't generally a very nice place, probably not even in Switzerland. And he's almost certainly still legally in custody in a secure wing of some hospital.

Great! How much of the tax payers money is going to be wasted making sure a Class 3 misdemeanor conviction sticks to Heene. I guess the police need to CYA to sate the media's demand for justice! I wonder who will get the Pulitzer for exposing this atrocity? As for Polanski, the phrase self-imposed exile says it all in that travesty.

I agree with you that Polanski is a creep but he didn't rob the cradle when he got married to Sharon Tate. She was 25 when she tied the knot with Polanski in early 1968. That's a long way from the cradle.

On your show yesterday, you said regarding Thaddeus McCotter and the HAPPY Act that even good people do something screwed up. I guess this is Sarkozy's screw-up.

And if Polanski has a medical issue so severe it requires him to be released from prison, how was it OK for him to travel to Switzerland in the first place?

French he is. Too bad. I thought he might be better than Chirac. Polanski is a creep. As far as I am concerned, he robbed the cradle when he married Sharon Tate. Woody Allen another cradle robber and pervert is standing by Polanski. They are sick!
