Literary Review’s Bad Sex in Fiction Award 2009
by Tammy on December 11, 2009Here’s the worst of the bad. Enjoy! [Content warning! While it's bad, it's still badly described sex, sort of.] Okay, I put the examples after the jump just to protect those who need the protection ;) Steel yourselves… Jonathan Littell has won the seventeenth annual Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Award, for The Kindly Ones (Chatto & Windus). The prize (a plaster foot) was presented by award-winning actor Charles Dance. It was accepted on Littell’s behalf by his editor at Chatto & Windus, Alison Samuel… The judges used the occasion to praise an ambitious and impressive novel. They said: ‘It is in part a work of genius. However, a mythologically inspired passage and lines such as “I came suddenly,...

Rep. Chaffetz: “I didn’t put any crap in the bill”
by Pat_S on December 10, 2009A post by Pat Now there’s a quote I can hold as close to my heart as, “Give me liberty or give me death”. A million dollars for oyster rehabilitation is just one of the earmarks stuffed into a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that just passed the House. House passes $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill

The Middle View on Climate Change
by Pat_S on December 10, 2009A post by Pat You may have seen this video before. It’s been around for awhile, but this is a good time to watch once again. Bob Carter, noted critic of climate change alarmism, says we must acknowledge that human activity has an effect on local climates, in some cases warming, in others, cooling. The case for global effects is greatly overstated by the alarmists. CO2 is a minor green house gas and will affect warming, but doubling CO2 from pre-industrial times will result in only a one degree warming. Most of that effect has already occurred. It is a waste of money to impose draconian limits on emissions and causes unnecessary harm to economies. Scientists are so intimidated against...

Raising the ceiling so the roof won’t fall in
by Pat_S on December 9, 2009A post by Pat The freakish carnival of insanity coming out of Washington continues. The Democrats are going to increase the debt ceiling by a whopping $1.8 trillion dollars now so they won’t have to increase it again closer to the 2010 elections. They’re worried about a backlash. Steny Hoyer in a breathtaking display of lunacy explains the need to raise the debt ceiling in this way: “We’ve incurred this debt. We have to pay our bills.” So increasing the fictitious and ignored debt ceiling is paying our bills? I’m going to max out my credit card and then ask the credit card company to increase my limit in order to mark the bill paid. A sane person might ask...

Satsuma Tangerines!
by Maynard on December 9, 2009A post by Maynard I know nothing about food. So this will be an ignorant note. But maybe it will be helpful to my fellow ignoramuses. This is the time of year when satsuma tangerines appear in groceries. Seems to me this is the perfect tangerine variant (maybe not even a real tangerine?). Aside from being delicious, the satsumas are seedless, and the skin peels off effortlessly. They’re even American-grown. This is as good as food containing neither ethanol nor caffeine can get. Don’t let the season slip by without grabbing an armful!

Voodoo socks for your Christmas stockings?
by Pat_S on December 9, 2009A post by Pat The entrepreneurial spirit is as universal as bad bosses. Wang Bang-yu [No comment], a 27-yr old computer engineer in Taiwan, quit his job because he couldn’t stand his boss who, he says, kept stepping on him. To release his emotions he decided to stomp on his boss, so to speak. Wang Bang-yu drew the outline of a doll on the bottom of his socks and inscribed the outline with “my ex-boss” then went on a therapeutic stomping spree. It worked. He felt much better. Feeling better, but being unemployed, Wang Bang-yu thought there might be some money in these voodoo socks so he’s marketing them. In addition to the original “my ex-boss” palliative inscription, voodoo socks...

by Tammy on December 8, 2009Okay everyone, I mentioned this on Tammy Radio today–I am preparing a “Holiday Drinks” netcast for the TAMs and am calling for recipe submissions. While I have a few favorites of my own, please submit your recipe here for possible inclusion in the netcast. So have at it, and remember peeps, I think I have about 28 listeners now and there’s about 57 or 58 readers of the blog, so every single one of you counts.
