POTUS Brings TOTUS to Chat with 6th Graders
by Pat_S on January 25, 2010A post by Pat **UPDATE Politics Daily says we should look carefully. Obama is not addressing the children from the podium, he is speaking to journalists. Somehow that warrants a podium and a teleprompter in the small confines of a schoolroom. Journalists, children, what’s the difference anyway? This picture was making the rounds yesterday with a question is it real and where’s it from. I was of the opinion it had to fake. Even though Obama is a little boy playing President, surely he had advisers who would recognize the ludicrous pomposity of setting up the Presidential podium complete with TOTUS to speak to 6th grade students in a classroom. It is real and there’s video too. (h/t ArtGal) This...

Lead Us Not Into Temptation or Don’t Blame the Monks for the Drunks?
by Pat_S on January 24, 2010A post by Pat Buckfast tonic wine, a.k.a. Buckie, is 15% alcohol, has more caffeine than Red Bull and is produced by Benedictine monks at Buckfast Monastery in Scotland. It is touted to be a relaxing medicinal tonic but now that it has become a cult drink among Scottish youth, it is also known as The Scourge of Scotland. It is a wine that is intended for tippling but the youngsters swill down the drink on street corners and then apparently go on rampages. Now the monks are being pressured to stop manufacturing the wine or change the recipe by taking out the alcohol and caffeine. The product brings in millions of Euros for the Church so it’s a dilemma...

Outrageous!: Biden assures Iraqis US will appeal dismissal of Blackwater charges
by Pat_S on January 23, 2010A post by Pat Watch your back if you are putting your life on the line for this country. No one who is placed in a hostile environment doing work for our country can count on their own government’s loyalty. In 2007 the accused Blackwater security guards were guarding U.S. diplomats in Iraq. A shootout occurred and seventeen people were killed. The incident spurred anti-American sentiment among Iraqis. Five of the guards were charged with manslaughter and a guilty plea taken from the sixth. The men had their day in court. The evidence was murky. The judge ruled the justice department mishandled the evidence and violated the men’s Constitutional rights. The dismissal angered Iraqis so now, for misguided malicious policy...

Have We Seen The Worst?
by Pat_S on January 22, 2010A post by Pat When things get bad we are inclined to console ourselves by thinking they could be worse. When things are the worst we take encouragement that they can only get better. As Charles Krauthammer describes this last week: Maybe this last week is more than a passing joy. The magic is gone for Obama and it will never return. The game is over for being a god. Now he’s out there trying to be one of the folks. People don’t trade down on gods. They leave them to crumble on their pedestals in abandoned temples. We don’t know if the worst is over or yet to come. Still, the events of this week give us encouragement.

U.S. Raids Are Irritating the Afghans
by Pat_S on January 21, 2010A post by Pat We already severely limited the rules of engagement in Afghanistan to avoid civilian casualties. Now we’re restricting them even further by eliminating night raids on private homes so we won’t irritate them. US to tighten rules on Afghan raids NATO forces in Afghanistan are preparing to limit night raids on private homes, even if it means losing some tactical advantage, to curb rising public anger. NATO spokesman Rear Adm. Gregory Smith told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that a directive would be issued soon to set down the new rules. Nighttime raids on private homes have emerged as the Afghans’ No. 1 complaint after Gen. Stanley McChrystal limited the use of airstrikes and other...
