Hugh Hefner, others donate money to save Hollywood sign from developers
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has come to the rescue of the Hollywood sign on Monday, anteing up $900,000 to help in the effort to preserve the land to the west of the famed landmark.
Another $500,000 matching grant came from the Tiffany Foundation and Aileen Getty, it was announced Monday by the Trust for Public Land, which spearheaded the rally to save the sign in the Hollywood Hills.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had been an early supporter of the effort to save the 138-acre property, attended a news conference to announce that the money had been raised. He said the Hollywood sign is a “symbol of dreams and a symbol of opportunity and hope.”
This is kind of like the case where the old Ryman Auditorium in Nashville that almost was demolished until some people there woke up to what a stupid idea it would be let that happen.
Why Hefner is putting up the bucks and not types like Lucas or Spielberg escapes me.

Maybe they can add “Land” back on to the end of it and turn in back into an ad for a housing development!

Arnold should know better than to bandy about such chafing capitalist terms like “opportunity” and “dreams” in the liberal stronghold of Hollywood.
Perhaps Arnold is getting a kickback of some kind…wouldn’t surprise me a bit!
last time the sign was in danger of falling over it’s alice cooper who was one of the first celebrities to come to it’s rescue- he symbolically donated one of the o’s in his name( and money of course.)
in 1932 actress peggy entwistle committed suicide by jumping off the H. the sign at that time said hollywoodland.

I do not TRUST greedy land developers and thank God for common sense in saving the sign.
Red Barr, I hope you’re not suggesting Mr. Graham (in the above video link) is a ‘greedy land developer’, because I know him and can assure you he is completely upright and honest person in business and life. It’s funny though how you ‘wouldn’t trust a land developer’ as you assume they’re ‘greedy’, but you WOULD trust a politican. LOL! There’s sense for ya. Go figure. Anyhow, Mr. Graham is a real estate broker and agent who sells land in Los Angeles and has solid information on this scam. From the posts here it seems that many indeed are led by emotion instead of hard cold facts. Goes to show ya how far nostalgia for anything old Hollywood will take a person. The point is however, the Hollywood sign was NEVER in danger. This is about money, the aquisition of LOTS of it by some. Nothing more.
Once again, the Hollywood community demonstrates their unique set of priorities.
