North Korea: The Next Step
by Maynard on May 25, 2010A post by Maynard Here’s The Economist‘s follow-up story in the aftermath of the torpedo recovery. As The Economist sees it, the other relevant powers (South Korea, America, Japan) are on board to squeeze North Korea, and this puts the ball squarely in China’s court. Will China condemn North Korea, or will it find an excuse to do nothing? If the Chinese lifeline isn’t pinched, then North Korea will end up shrugging off new sanctions. On the other hand, if China is willing to take North Korea to the woodshed, then there may be some changes. The Economist suggests that the other players try not to give China any excuses to go AWOL on this one, which the Chinese would...

Oil Field of Dreams
by Pat_S on May 23, 2010A post by Pat The petroleum engineers aren’t having much luck in shutting down the oil spurt despite some novel ideas. Bob Woodward thinks we should hand the problem over to Google. They’re smart people. …it is a potentially giant disaster of the — I mean, most disasters come and go. 9/11 came and went, okay. This continues. …Why don’t they call in Google? Why don’t they call in some of the people who have these great minds? Not everyone thinks the disaster of 9/11 is gone, but that’s another matter. Woodward goes on to explain why the oil companies make so much money. ..I think the one thing we’ve learned about oil is—it’s kind of answered the question why...

Terrorist goes to pieces
by Pat_S on May 22, 2010A post by Pat Key Al Qaeda Figure Accidentally Blows Himself Up, U.S. Officials Say A man whom the U.S. described as a key figure in Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula accidentally blew himself up, U.S. military officials told Fox News. The officials say Nayif Al-Qahtani was “messing with a bomb” when it went off. U.S. officials had been watching him, but Fox News’ sources insist the U.S. had nothing to do with his death. Al-Qahtani was “a vibrant guy linked to ongoing operations planning, and his death will have an impact,” one official told Fox News. Quite an impact indeed and all over the place. A couple of others who had a bad day at the office– Otherwise...

Your Saturday Arizona Read-The-Law Sing Along
by Tammy on May 22, 2010When Kermit the Frog and the Cookie Monster would do a better job running the country, you know we’ve got a problem. The good news is Jan Brewer of Arizona is shocking the establishment, a la Sarah Palin, by not breaking down and surrendering. Instead, she’s doubled-down and on the offensive. Here’s her new ad for Arizona noting that the Growed-Ups in Washington could use a little lesson on Reading Fundamentals. Bonus: who knew Sock Puppets had so many expressions?!

Chicago’s Mayor Daley Threatens To Shoot A Reporter
by Tammy on May 21, 2010All in good fun of course, after all, there was laughing (by Daley) and everything! The ensuing conversation between the demagogue of Chicago and the reporter reveals why the Founding Fathers put their faith in us, not in the government. Mayor Daley Threatens to Shoot the Messenger—Namely, Me Mayor Daley loves to bag on the local media, and given my recent line of inquiry into his politics and policies, I’ve never expected to be greeted with a fruit basket at City Hall. But even I was a bit taken aback this morning when the mayor grabbed a rifle and threatened to shoot me. The mayor was holding a press conference to discuss what the city was doing to prepare for...

Brewer to Obama: Send Guard Choppers From Other States
by Tammy on May 21, 2010A good idea. I also like the fact that Brewer and AZ isn’t just pointing a finger at Obama demanding action, she’s giving him a battle plan. No excuses for him to not act. Ariz. gov.: Send Guard choppers from other states Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is asking President Barack Obama to reallocate National Guard helicopters from other states to help Arizona secure its border with Mexico. Brewer made the request in a letter to Obama dated Thursday and released Friday. She says Arizona only has four OH-58 Kiowa helicopters available for border missions because some choppers are deployed overseas and others are reserved for training missions. Brewer requests that additional helicopters be freed up from training missions or taken...

About That North Korean Torpedo Attack
by Maynard on May 21, 2010A post by Maynard The sinking of a South Korean warship by a North Korean submarine has been played down in the media. At some level this is understandable. To acknowledge the incident properly is to acknowledge a war in progress, and a big war at that. Maybe if we close our eyes, it will all go away. Or at least the “peace” scenario may be less unpleasant than war would be. And even if a war were to be easily won, the aftermath of victory would leave South Korea and China to deal with a collapsed North Korea and an entire nation full of starving brainwashed lunatics. Yes, I can see why an option short of war is sought....
