Guns for Dummies
by Maynard on June 19, 2010A post by Maynard Tammy is planning an educational excursion with Chris to a local gun store. I figure it’s a good occasion to put in my 2 cents. First, some philosophy. Anyone with any intellectual integrity will acknowledge that the Second Amendment was written by men who understood that tyranny cannot prevail over an armed populace. The American Revolution began with the “shot heard ’round the world” when the British raided Lexington and Concord for the purpose of seizing arms, but the colonists shot back rather than be disarmed. This is your American heritage; discard it at your peril! The Second Amendment prevents the American government from ever doing to the American people what the British government tried to...

Mexico looking for PR firm to improve country’s image
by Pat_S on June 17, 2010A post by Pat Mexico is looking for a PR firm to help improve the country’s image. Tens of thousands of people have died in drug related violence since Pres. Calderone declared war on the cartels. Beheadings, kidnappings, torture, murder, all this is bad for the tourist industry. The drug cartels once struggled with an image problem too. When dropping their victims in vats of acid didn’t get them a reputation shocking enough, they choose the PR firm of al-Qaeda and switched to beheadings. (Why are beheadings so popular with Mexico’s drug gangs?) The U.S. State Department says millions of U.S. citizens visit Mexico safely every year. It’s a matter of staying away from the bad places and sticking to...

Maybe She’ll Send the People of the Gulf Coast Some Cake
by Tammy on June 17, 2010After she enjoys her lovely day at the Malibu beach, of course, and very probably goes to the Laker game tonight. After all, who needs a job, clean sand and seafood when a slice of cake will do? First Lady Michelle Obama Enjoys a Family Beach Day at Billionaire’s Mansion Even a day at the beach is done in presidential style for the First Family. Currently enjoying a relaxing California vacation, Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha arrived at the extravagant beachside mansion of billionaire financial mogul, Howard Marks, on Wednesday afternoon…RadarOnline.com exclusively learned that mother and daughter pulled into the luxurious private estate in Malibu over looking the Pacific Ocean at 3 p.m. They were escorted by a police motorcade...

Small organizations are the most dangerous to democracy
by Pat_S on June 17, 2010A post by Pat *UPDATE 6/18: The vote was again postponed. Maybe the ultimate result of the NRA sellout will be to kill the bill. I don’t think they planned it that way. Apparently small organizations are the greatest danger to democracy. Environmental groups were not pleased by the House Democrats exempting the NRA from the DISCLOSE Act so there was another rewrite and even more groups were exempted. Groups to Pelosi: Drop NRA exemption on campaign finance bill Forty-five political and advocacy groups, including the Alliance for Justice, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Sierra Club, have warned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that they will oppose new campaign finance and disclosure reforms unless an exemption in the bill...

Economics 101: Production + Investment + Consumption
by Maynard on June 16, 2010A rambling, meandering economic post by Maynard As America goes broke, China is selling us more stuff than ever. A surge in Chinese exports and rising anger in the US Congress will put renewed pressure on China to allow its currency to rise against the US dollar. Chinese trade figures showed exports leaping by 48.5 per cent in May over the year before, way ahead of analysts’ forecasts. Data released in the US showed America’s trade deficit widening slightly in April, with some economists arguing that the improvement in net trade and its contribution to US growth appeared to have stalled. Meanwhile, as you’ve probably heard, Obama is apparently preparing to double down on his stimulus binge with another $50...
