Hi everyone. For the life of me I thought I made this note on the site yesterday but for some reason it didn’t publish. No, you’re not going crazy–there was no 3rd hour yesterday, but there will be a Special Report coming up later today. Watch this space, your RSS or iTunes for the alert when it hits. Thanks :)

      Bated or Baited Breath? This sent me googling to find an answer someone else googled:

      Meaning

      Breathing that is subdued because of some emotion or difficulty.

      Origin
      Which is it – bated or baited? We have baited hooks and baited traps, but bated – what’s that? Bated doesn’t even seem to be a real word, where else do you hear it? Having said that, ‘baited breath’ makes little sense either. How can breath be baited? With worms?

      There seems little guidance in contemporary texts. Search in Google and you’ll find about the same number of hits for ‘baited breath’ as ‘bated breath’. In one of the best selling books of all time – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, (whose publisher could surely have afforded the services of a proof-reader), we have:

      “The whole common room listened with baited breath.”

      As so often, help is found in the writings of the Bard. The earliest known citation of the phrase is from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, 1596:

      What should I say to you? Should I not say
      ‘Hath a dog money? is it possible
      A cur can lend three thousand ducats?’ Or
      Shall I bend low and in a bondman’s key,
      With bated breath and whispering humbleness, Say this;
      ‘Fair sir, you spit on me on Wednesday last;
      You spurn’d me such a day; another time
      You call’d me dog; and for these courtesies
      I’ll lend you thus much moneys’?

      Bated is just a shortened form of abated (meaning – to bring down, lower or depress). ‘Abated breath’ makes perfect sense and that’s where the phrase comes from.

      Geoffrey Taylor, in his little poem Cruel, Clever Cat, 1933, used the confusion over the word to good comic effect:

      Sally, having swallowed cheese
      Directs down holes the scented breeze
      Enticing thus with baited breath
      Nice mice to an untimely death.

    A special Saturday treat to remind us of live Saturday Tammy. I think I’ll chill a couple of beers. Summer ale, actually.

  5. Chuck says:

    No problem, Tammy. And yes, you made a note on the site about no third hour. I remember reading it yesterday.

  6. aardvark says:

    I have to say I started to listen again to last night’s pcast because I was in such a pissy PMS mood I missed the droll humor of TB’s opening. It is about a thousand degrees. I’ve known a few friends who also don’t like hot it is so sad and yet so funny. I’m really still laughing at it as I type. Tammy cracks me up so much and what is the quote, wisdom is the soul of wit?

    I like the BILL song by McCoo, too. I think the MITT/SP stuff is so overwhelming now I’m just waiting for the Tammyishness of it all in her show. Can’t deal anymore, no one is telling the truth in politics, everyone edging for their own personal kill, while we become slaves. Bachmann reminds me of Anita Bryant, both she and Palin have weird friends who I think are marionetting them through weirdo belief systems that would blow people’s minds if they knew how whack they were (Bachmann went to Oral Roberts U for God’s sake, and I’m a pentecostal and I don’t just think I KNOW that how insane and greedy and prosperity gospel that racket is) and Mitt is scarier than Obama to me. The Rinos do nothing but seem to like to watch, Palin has no power anyway, the Christian right, if they take over, will inherit a tyrannical system set up by Obama to be able to make all Margaret Atwood’s right wing fears come true. If we think this Marxist swing is bad, try a “religious swing” to the hard right. Truth be told the ONLY reason I’m even tuning in to what’s happening is Tammy. And what Tammy said in the wee hours of her Thursday 3rd Hour. She said something so beautiful… said that look even if SP can’t make it… we have to try. We have to do something. She is the only reason I have any hope in the temporal realm, what she said and what that means. Tammy Bruce has courage. Beyond a rarity and tho I cry a lot I don’t cry for without good cause. That made me cry.
