There’s a big hubbub about Arizona’s SB 1070– the law intended to stop or slow illegal immigration. The fight isn’t over. An injunction is only a bump in the road, and Jan Brewer vows to fight to the end, the Supreme Court, if necessary.

What hasn’t hit the news as much, is the fact that SB 1108 took effect today.

This law makes it so that those 21 and older that wish to carry a concealed firearm now can without a permit (Daddy Govt saying it’s okay). Arizona will still require training, background checks for those who wish to still get a concealed permit to retain their right to carry if traveling to other states who honor Arizona’s permit. It of course still requires you to be carrying a legally owned firearm, and not be prohibited from owning one, etc. It’s basically a common sense change to the law reflecting Arizona’s constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms in the state. Carrying a firearm openly without a permit has been the law for some time. But, say you wore an unbuttoned, untucked shirt, and the wind blew it so it happened to cover your firearm. You could then be charged with carrying concealed without a permit– pretty absurd. This clears that up. There are a few other changes, too.

Vermont and Alaska have had this law for years, and OMG! You have heard all the horror stories right? In Vermont and Alaska, dogs started sleeping with cats. I think they ate them too. Then, it was “the Wild West” and there were shootouts, and Billy The Kid came back, then aliens came and had their ray guns and then… OMG everyone died! Twice!

Yeah.. That’s what the Brady Campaign would say happened, anyway.

The truth is.. NOTHING out of the ordinary has happened. Those who wish to carry their firearm, do; no one knows any different and nothing happens– until the bad guy strikes, and those who wish to defend themselves, CAN. The criminals will always carry their firearm concealed, despite the law. I see it on the news here in Los Angeles every damn night. States like California love their citizens to be victims. Police are only a 15 minute (if you’re lucky) call away, right? States like Arizona know that the more criminals know their victim can fight back, the more they will think twice before striking.

What is interesting, is that Arizona has large cities like Phoenix and Tucson. Such a law has never been in effect for such a large metropolitan area. I still suspect life to go on just as it has. Tomorrow morning, the beautiful desert sunrise will still come.. the cities will not have been razed by new gun crime wave, and how much are you willing to bet crime goes down?

Several criminology studies exist that show there likely will be a drop in violent crime due to this law. Oddly they indicate that Police are likely safer too with fewer being shot with an increase in concealed carry. Maybe the police are being more careful? I don’t know. I think it’s really quite funny that one of those studies was contracted by the Clinton Administration, hoping to justify some sort of infringement on citizens gun rights. The Clinton Administration then suppressed the findings for as long as they could get away with it. Why is it that Liberals just lie and go on with the attack on these rights even after proving we will all suffer more violent crime if they win? I think they have a brain development problem. Really. The ones who just want it out of a lust for unlimited power are maybe evil. The majority I think would be simply sick or crippled in a way.

Good job Chris.. and I’m betting that crime will indeed go down.

    Great post, Chris.

I just wish Clark County in NV gets rid of open carry permits!

    • Chris says:

I have read up on NV, Clark County.. it’s a registration that’s required to open carry, not a permit. But, yeah. I don’t like Nevada’s laws. They don’t have a total state preemption letting some cities get crazy, like North Las Vegas, and Boulder City.

I’m going to be hunkering down in fear out here in Phoenix. It might rain today.

Nevada needs to fight for a state preemtion law ASAP. That’s how Illinois and California got so screwed up. It starts in the big cities, the higher the crime the more restrictive they get, which CAUSES more crime, and then the cities start infuencing the state legislature on the basis that the rules aren’t uniform, which gives the legislature cover to make them uniformly bad.

Oh great, now all the illegal Mexicans will be packing heat AND the cops won’t be able to send them packing to La Crackcasa de Mexico? Not a well timed defeat for 1070…

    • Chris says:

Any criminals would be packing heat ANYWAY. When did you ever hear of a hoodlum say, “oh man.. if only it were legal for me to carry concealed so I can rob that poor woman!” from behind a tree? For those who are inclined to break laws, be criminals, rob people.. what would a measly law do to stop them from doing it already? All this does is allow the law abiding to excercise their right to self defense.

I live in Michigan and we’ve had a conceal and carry permit for quite some time. If you live in a state that allows you to conceal and carry a handgun, you can find out which states honor that permit here.

Remember that if the government takes your guns away, it will be easier for the government to kill you.

Ya, I’m still waiting for the rampant gun battles to break out here in the streets of Tucson. So far …. everything seems quiet. I think the 1070 protesters are causing more of a ruckus with old tires on I-19…. Losers! Oh snap! Maybe we should ban tires now =0

I wish Virginia had a law like this. While our laws are certainly more pro-gun than California, we still have to ask Daddy Government for permission on concealed carry. Personally, I think we’d be much safer if every law abiding citizen got the necessary training and practice to handle a gun safely and carried a concealed weapon. We’d certainly save money on the costs of prosecuting criminals!

“I would like to protest against mean and cowardly attitude of the British press towards the uprising in Warsaw […]. In general an impression was created, that the Poles deserve to be beaten, even though they were doing exactly all of this, to which allies broadcasting stations were calling them for several years […]. This is my message for leftist journalists and for intelligence – in general. Remember, that one always pays for his dishonesty and cowardice. Don’t even think, that for years on end you will be shoes licking servants of the Soviet regime, and then suddenly you will return to the spiritual decency.”- george orwell

today august 1 is the anniversary of the start of the failed Warsaw Uprising in 1944 when the poles tried to throw the nazis into disarray until the soviet army could reach the city. after the war, the heroes of this rebellion who tried to free poland from tyranny were arrested, some executed, by stalin. they even jailed a polish soldier who went under cover in a concentration camp, escaped and tried to warn the allies that it was a death camp. these are the things all fascists do whether they call themselves nazis or communists or socialists or now ‘ community organizers’. and they start by taking away the citizens’s rights to their property and their rights to defend themselves and protect their families. and by marginalizing critics and perceived enemies through what eventually becomes brutality.

an open border, over run with dangerous criminal gangsters or crime ravaged cities coupled with onerous gun restrictions is asking for people to be cowed and terrorized in order to control them. it’s like tying serfs to a land of poverty and fear they are never allowed or empowered to leave. and the ‘ mean and cowardly’ press are on the side of the terrorists. as are liberals and the administration. in my state you can be arrested for shooting someone who breaks into your house which is absolutely insane but underlines the true meaning of laws limiting the citizens’s right to be armed- ultimately like the nazis they do not want you to be able to defend yourself against a criminal government impinging upon your rights. severely restrictive gun laws only empower criminals and criminalize the law abiding who can read the constitution on their own. it gives the government complete easily abused power the founders understood they should never be allowed without severe restrictions and only under certain circumstances.

my friend who lives in a very dangerous area has just the right attitude toward criminals breaking in to do no good where they do not belong- they’re going to be blown out the hole they crawled in through by a very large gun in the hands of a very small woman. as it should be.

The Constitution states that the right to keep and bear arms cannot be infringed. This actually extends to the state and local levels, too because it does not say “Congress shall make no law…” here.

I should mention that there are many reasons why you should STILL get your carry permit in Arizona: Having the permit allows you to carry within 1,000 feet of a school. Allows carry in Arizona’s National Parks. Allows you to carry in an establishment that serves alcohol (as long as you do not consume alcohol). Training on laws and justified use of force, etc.
