Si Se Puede! Arizona Boycotts Failing
by Tammy on July 28, 2010This is especially sweet news as we await the judge’s decision (expected today) regarding Arizona’s SB 1070, the new law scheduled to go live on Thursday. Besides the moral victory, the failure of the boycotts sends a supportive message to every other state that has signaled interest in legislation similar to Arizona’s. Keep in mind as you read this story–the boycotts not only have failed–but have had the opposite impact as we launched our commitment of support for Arizona–hotels, tourism in general and revenue for the state have all increased during the past two months. Sweet, and congratulations Patriots! Arizona Hotels Thriving Despite Boycotts Over Immigration Law Arizona’s tourism industry has a target on its back, but the widespread boycotts...

Why the Volt?
by Maynard on July 28, 2010An off-the-cuff analysis by Maynard The new Volt has been in the news. The Chevy Dolt (I’m going to stop calling it a “Volt”, for reasons that will come clear) will cost $41,000. A Federal tax credit of $7,500 cuts the out-of-pocket expense to $33,500. The Dolt, a 4-door sedan, runs on battery power for up to 40 miles but has a small gasoline engine to generate electricity once the battery runs down. The gas engine can generate power to run the car another 300 miles. I (Maynard) went to Starfleet Academy, and I think this kind of stuff is neat. I’d be happy to have one. But why in the world should the government subsidize it? It’s not like...

Elton John Bashes Musicians Boycotting Arizona
by Tammy on July 27, 2010Sweet. Another of the many reasons to be liking Elton John these days. I was especially impressed when he played in Tel Aviv, slamming boycotts of Israel as well. Elton John’s choice words for boycotting musicians Elton John didn’t mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words: “We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won’t come here. They are (expletive)wits! Let’s face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what’s the...

UPDATE 3:45pm PT: Politico–DISCLOSE Act still a few votes shy Posting this at 2pm PT: Here’s the latest. You still have time to act. From Tea Party Patriots: The Democrats are running scared, fearful of the impact grassroots activists will have in November. With the DISCLOSE Act, which will go into effect almost immediately, in time for the November elections, they will be able to effectively and legally shut us down. The effort to silence us before the elections is tantamount...

Atlas Shrugged, the Movie?
by Maynard on July 27, 2010A post by Maynard I’m a great fan of Atlas Shrugged, but I’d be surprised if anyone could turn it into a decent movie. So we can hope for the best, but our enthusiasm must be cautious. First the bad news. No, Angelina Jolie isn’t in this. On the positive side, Variety says its actually filming. That makes it real, and not just another Hollywood rumor. Lots of projects never get off the ground. The long-brewing feature version of author Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” has begun shooting in Los Angeles as a $5 million indie produced by John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow. Cameras began rolling over the weekend on a five-week shoot for “Atlas Shrugged Part One” with Paul Johansson...

Economics of the Railroad
by Maynard on July 27, 2010A post by Maynard Having mentioned Atlas Shrugged, it’s only right that I add a word about real railroads. This article in The Economist caught my eye. Nothing urgent here, but it’s another small slice of the productive real world trying to survive in the face of aggressive political theory and ideology. It’s a long article, but I’ll try to summarize the high points. If you’re a normal citizen, what do you know about the operation of railroads? Probably very little. All you hear in the news is an occasional story about Amtrak…generally about Amtrak going broke and needing more subsidies, but we’re supposed to keep it going and grow it so we can become more like Europe. California, which...

The Tyranny of the Dollar
by Maynard on July 24, 2010A rambling (be warned!) and maybe kooky but somewhat educational post on a few principles of economic theory by Maynard As Madame Speaker said, we’d know what was in the Health Control bill after we passed it. The other day, we learned the health bill augments the 1099 tax form to track gold coin transactions. This is another surprise attack in the economic war of the government against the people. You should know more about this war, since you’re in it. Some history: Until the Great Depression, Western nations were broadly on the gold standard. This meant that money equated to gold. Non-gold money existed as a matter of convenience, but it was not legal tender (meaning you weren’t legally...
