From the U.N.: Too Bad About the Cheonan
by Maynard on July 14, 2010A post by Maynard The Economist posted this article about the long-awaited official reaction to the attack in which 46 South Korean sailors died after their ship was struck by a North Korean torpedo. After lengthy deliberation, the U.N. decided the situation should be resolved by another of those strongly-worded letters, this one being addressed to: To Whom It May Concern. In an almost Platonically ideal example of fudgery, the wording of the statement condemns the incident (which it does at least identify as an “attack”), but places the blame on nobody in particular. The thing, all of 384 words, is a bit of a marvel, and bears study. The American delegation is claiming that it “sends a clear message”...

Running of the Bulls
by Maynard on July 14, 2010A post by Maynard Another year, another series of bull runs. It’s not a thing I think about until the headlines come up like this one: 5 injured, 3 by goring, in running of the bulls PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — Officials say five runners have been injured, three by goring, in a dangerous last running of the bulls at Spain’s San Fermin festival. Bulls fell and tossed people on the slippery cobblestone streets of Pamplona where a red bull at the tail of the pack fell and became separated from the rest… Okay, I’m curious enough to check the Wiki entry. Every year between 200 and 300 people are injured during the run although most injuries are contusions due to...

Tammy Explains Everything You Need To Know About Economics, In 4 Minutes
by Tammy on July 12, 2010A Golden Oldie from Tammy Radio in 2007. It is, of course, still relevant today as is most everything I’ve ever spoken or written about. My example in this instance involves Zebras, Scotty on Star Trek, Alec Baldwin, and France. After this you’ll never need to listen to Neil Cavuto or Suze Orman again. My thanks to Maynard for being the Keeper of the Tammy Archive for saving this invaluable Tammy Radio gem.

Your History Fix for the Day
by Tammy on July 12, 2010Historians locate King Arthur’s Round Table Researchers exploring the legend of Britain’s most famous Knight believe his stronghold of Camelot was built on the site of a recently discovered Roman amphitheatre in Chester. Legend has it that his Knights would gather before battle at a round table where they would receive instructions from their King. But rather than it being a piece of furniture, historians believe it would have been a vast wood and stone structure which would have allowed more than 1,000 of his followers to gather… Mr Gidlow said: “In the 6th Century, a monk named Gildas, who wrote the earliest account of Arthur’s life, referred to both the City of Legions and to a martyr’s shrine within...

Illegal Aliens in Utah “Wonder If Americans Are Being Given Preference Over Them.”
by Tammy on July 12, 2010What a concept! In a Pigs Flying moment, the state of Utah has decided to actually consider the full income of illegal aliens before throwing food stamps at them. You see, before this Utah wouldn’t consider the entire income of illegal aliens when it came to determining food stamp eligibility. Yet, for families in Utah that were actually comprised of American citizens, their full income was considered when assessing eligibility. Looks like the Days of Wine and Roses and Food Stamps You Really Don’t Deserve for Utah’s illegal aliens might be over. Bottom line: What Utah has done removes an incentive for illegal aliens to stay in this nation. We don’t need to discuss or consider something like deportation. Utah...

UK Guardian Takes Note of Flip-flopping McCain
by Pat_S on July 11, 2010A post by Pat Paul Harris, UK Guardian correspondent stationed in New York, takes notice that McCain is too far right. He realizes McCain is in one of the toughest fights of his political life and expected some of his “traditionally liberal” attitudes to shift right. Harris is pretty much throwing up his hands over how far right McCain is sounding these days. Me too. John McCain ditches his liberal past and turns hard right When does being a maverick turn into a shameless flip-flopper? Pretty much about now, according to many observers of the long and storied political career of former Republican presidential candidate John McCain …McCain’s traditionally liberal attitudes to immigration reform were always likely to take a...

Clarence Thomas’ Nephew Tased, Beaten by Hospital Guards
by Pat_S on July 10, 2010A post by Pat Derek Thomas, the nephew of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, says he was beaten and tased at a New Orleans area hospital after refusing to put on a hospital gown. Initial reports said he was taken to the hospital because of a possible suicide attempt. Security guards punched him in the lip, yanked his hair and tased him when he tried to leave the hospital. He is an epileptic, a fact made known at the time he was brought to the hospital. His family says he suffered a massive seizure as a consequence of the violence inflicted on him.

Death *OR* Taxes?
by Maynard on July 10, 2010Maynard wonders whether the return of the “death tax” will cause a rash of suicides, with worse to come… 2010 presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Everyone knows there’s no escaping death and taxes. But 2010 may be the only chance we’ll ever get to choose between death or taxes. Here’s the quick summary of where we are and how we got here, courtesy of The Heritage Foundation (click to the full article for further editorial comment): Current Policy: Congressional policy on the death tax has been to phase it out and then abolish it for close to a decade now. The 2001 tax cut began an eight-year phase out of the death tax. It lowered the rate from 55% in 2000...
