Here’s an interesting Wiki article on the debate of the health effects of the backscatter X-ray.

As far as I’m concerned, the big problem here is the assault on our fundamental liberties. And for what they’re taking away, it doesn’t feel like we’re getting much security. I’m not much worried about potential detriment to health. Of course, since I’m not traveling lately, that’s easy for me to say.

One cute means of protesting might be to get yourself a set of Flying Pasties, or (they claim to be better) special underwear from Rocky Flats Gear. These are amusing notions. But as a practical matter, I figure you’ll either be ignored or get yourself singled out for special attention. Don’t do this unless you’re prepared to make a scene.

I’m wondering if you could paste a text message on your belly or backside using cut out strips of tinfoil or some other material. Would this show up on the image? Could you cause the TSA agents to see a text message on your body, such as “Suck this Obama!”, with an arrow pointing to junk?

I agree Maynard. Our fundamental liberties are under assault all for the sake of political correctness. Tammy said today that there have been 600 complaints about TSA searches. The horrific stories of these invasive searches makes me wonder what possibly could be the probable cause. Apparently American’s are guilty until proven otherwise.

    Airport “Security”? by Thomas Sowell

Airlines do not wait for late passengers on originating flights (they do wait for passengers coming in on delayed flights where the airline might be considered at fault for missed connections). If people are going to opt out of the nudie-scanners (which I have also resolved to do although I am not traveling tomorrow), they had better plan to leave extra early to allow plenty of time to get through security.

The airlines will not be hurt financially tomorrow… they will simply leave people behind who have non-refundable tickets. Most airports are not operating the nudie-scanners and the airlines will serve the greater population who are not impacted. It’s not the airlines fault if people do not allow enough time to get through security. Those people will lose their money (unless they make a phone call to cancel the reservation a few minutes before the scheduled flight time to preserve the value of their about-to-be unused ticket less penalties for changing). And they will be stuck without hope of catching a later flight on the busiest travel day of the year (unless they stand by in hopes that other people will also miss later flights because they themselves opted out and didn’t make it to the gate on time).

The backlash against the airlines may come later because of how many angry people got left behind with their holiday plans ruined, but tomorrow the airlines will mostly be getting paid whether people catch their flights or not. I have not heard anything about any airlines planning to accommodate late travelers due to tomorrow’s planned protest.

It’s even possible that the TSA will work to expedite the flow of people who are willing to be scanned, and simply put the protesters off to the side in their own long lines as punishment. You can pull people out of line pretty efficiently and make them wait a long time to be patted down while the main flow of people thru the scanners is relatively unimpacted. The TSA may have to pull the bags of the protesters off the conveyor and pile them in a mess on the floor while the owners are waiting in line to be patted down.

No telling how this will play out, but if this protest is even partially successful, a lot of non-protesters will be impacted at the affected airports. Anyone who is travelling tomorrow, whether they are opting out or not, needs to allow a lot of extra time to get through security. Bring plastic bags to hold your pocket items, and put those plastic bags safely in the luggage you are sending through the xray machines . Don’t leave anything loose in bins or those little cups if you care about it, or it could be lost or stolen in the chaos at the conveyor belts.

This could become a very ugly travel day with lots of upset disillusioned people left behind in overcrowded airports. And if non-protesters are among them, then some are going to be angry at the protesters, not the TSA nor the airlines.

Geezer, I hear you and I think peeps know what’s at stake. This issue is bigger than us right now and frankly, for public relations sake, I don’t imagine empty flight leaving airports. This is not going to be one or two people late, it could affect complete flights. If we aren’t willing to put off with some inconvenience and protest over the beginning of an outrageous violation of right and, arguably, law, then we are no better than any group of people in history who put up with a rise in fascism because it was to inconvenient to face down. It could be an ugly travel day. Better than an ugly future.

Tammy, I agree with you wholeheartedly and I apologize for any mixed messages in the way I ended my earlier post with words about the hassles and not reinforcing the need to do it anyways with eyes wide open.

Good point that the Airlines might well respond to avoid the bad publicity it would create to leave more than a few people behind, especially if the pilots and crews are sympathetic for having been through it themselves. And if they don’t, we still need to do this. Godspeed to all the patriots who exercise their right to opt out and take a stand on Wednesday, and in the days to come, until we turn this around.

No need to apologize Geezer, there are so many elements to this, and so many fronts. I think there are defendable arguments all around, but you know me, I have my POV which I convey pretty strongly :) Just know if you have an opinion different from mine, there are likely other TAMs as well who are thinking the same thing. And I hope I didn’t put you off with my strong response :)

Proof positive folks our President and Secretary of Defense have no intention of defending our allies or us, well we already knew about the US part. North Korean mortar attack. This just amazes me. North Korea fires mortars on South Korea, killing several people and Defense Secretary Gates praises the South Koreans for showing restraint while O say the Chinese have to solve the problem?
