A remarkable woman who turned who own troubles into a life saving venture for so many others. May she rest in peace.
Former first lady Betty Ford dead at 93
She had been a soccer mom to four children, a professional dancer, a congressional wife and a model.
But Betty Ford will be forever linked to the work she did after the White House, when she moved to Rancho Mirage, Calif., with her late husband, former President Gerald R. Ford, and changed national attitudes about addiction.
“She made a great impact as a first lady,” said Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford’s secretary of state. “But I think she made a greater one afterwards. She maintained her commitments. She created the Betty Ford Center. She showed you could have a life after the presidency that was important and not based on the presidency.
“In all of this, she was a tower of strength for him.”
Betty Ford died Friday at age 93.
Her achievements include a tenure as first lady that earned her Good Housekeeping’s “Woman of the Year” seal of approval, and the founding of the pioneering Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage.
Rest in peace, Mrs. Ford.
