I’ve mentioned to you that I’ll be in New York with Johnny for the 9/11 10th anniversary this September so it’s especially nice to see some progress being made at the site. It’s always been so depressing to go and pay my respects, especially in the last few years, and to see apparently nothing accomplished. Well, it looks like we’re moving ahead. May God bless every soul lost on that horrible day. Let’s make sure Ground Zero becomes the tribute to the American spirit it so deserves to be. Click through for more pics of where things stand.

Redefining Manhattan’s skyline: Incredible new pictures of Ground Zero show substantial progress made on 9/11 Memorial

For nearly ten years, New York residents have waited and watched as construction of One World Trade Center has gone underway.

These incredible new images show the progress being made on the $3billion facility, which will rise to a symbolic 1,776ft in 2013 – becoming the tallest building in Manhattan…

Designed by renowned architect David Childs, One World Trade Center – formerly known as Freedom Tower until 2009 – will include three million square feet of office space, an observation deck over 1,241ft above ground and a sprawling public lobby boasting 50ft ceilings.

The new images also show progress being made on the the 9/11 Memorial, designed by the winning team of Michael Arad and Peter Walker, set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers, on an eight-acre plaza landscaped with a small forest of oak trees.

Photos of construction workers (there are 3,000 on site) echo the Port Authority’s assurance to the waiting public that extensive progress has been made in the last several months. Construction began in 2006.

Although I have driven past GZ many times, I have never seen the details before. Thanks for the pics! Btw, the tall building to the right, with the green dome, is the World Financial Center, where my husband worked at the time. (He missed his bus that morning and arrived after the first plane hit). Some of the fallen debris from the planes and WTC sliced off the edge of the building (half-way up) but miraculously, there was no loss of life in the bhilding (except for one person from Lehman, who had a meeting across the street at the World Trade Center that morning, on one of the top floors). Construction began almost immediately on the WFC, and today it is more beautiful than ever. Can’t say the same, yet, for the WTC, but, time will tell….

the utter DISASTER of how long it’s taken to build what we shudda built there is just disgusting…if i were the stupid designers i wudda built TWO HUGE TOWERS bigger and stronger to show the freaks who attacked us that they’ve made us STRONGER…not weaker, and to give them the ultimate middle finger salute!!

They are trying to reopen the site in time for the ten year anniversary. The design is a beautiful compromise. They are not actually building ON the WTC site. Those squares are called “the footprints” and will forever mark where the original towers stood. Along the sides of the footprints will be a perpetual waterfall and the names of everyone who died that day.

As for the length of time- blame it on the terrorists. Building took forever because they were constantly discovering new human remains and each time they did, the areas were shut down as a crime scene. Each victim of 9/11 was an individual human being and each death was accounted for. We don’t just sweep the debris away. We’re not animals. Blame the terrorists. God bless the people of New York.

I just got back from New York. We walked around the construction site that is Ground Zero. I have no words to express the feelings I had.

Agree with Sharky. It is an embarassment -the Empire State building was built in a year. Shows what 7 decades of liberal rule get you.
Any chance we can bring back Hoover?
