Your History Fix/Weekend News Lounge
by Tammy on October 15, 2011Happy weekend everyone! Here is an Open Thread/News Lounge where the usual ‘no links’ rule has been lifted in the name of sharing and lounging. Please use this post as your general point for chiming in about whatever news of the day is stuck in your craw :) Here are some history notes to get us started: Libyans battle to protect ancient treasures from looting …Local townspeople aided by the site’s archeological police patrolled 24/7. The Leptis Magna museum scattered its precious artifacts around various tightly secured warehouses. Its director went one step further, distributing a thoroughly documented inventory to friends in the capital an hour’s drive away, so even if the town were destroyed during the war its history...

Top 10 Richest Celebrities Supporting Wall Street Protests
by Tammy on October 13, 2011Aw, the sweet smell of dirty hippies and hypocrites in the morning. Newsbusters has a list of the obscenely rich celebrities beclowning themselves as they crawl over to support the Occupests in New York–who are supposedly protesting Big Money, Capitalism and the Obscenely Rich. Issa doesn’t have enforcement power, in other words, if Holder doesn’t comply or complies only in part there not much Issa can do about it. This is nothing new, the White House and other departments are stonewalling him on a number of issues and Issa’s not been creative at all in trying to force them to comply. The other issue is if Holder gets real aggressive and decides to go to court and have it officially quashed. What he’d claim in that instance is wobbly, as he can’t exactly claim Executive Privilege because...

Cow Tales: ‘Til The CEOs Come Home
by Pat_S on October 12, 2011Golf, sailing, mountain climbing, racing, these are hobbies you might expect for CEOs who need a break. Not Swiss CEO Jean-Claude Biver. He is CEO of, what else, a watch company who relaxes by herding cows and making cheese. Herding Cows Helps Swiss Executives Ease Boardroom Pressure “I always give priority to my home, to where I come from,” Biver, 62, said in an interview at his farm near Montreux, Switzerland, where his heifers were adorned with a traditional costume of pine boughs, bells and flower bouquets. “From here I get the strength to do my job.” “The biggest problem of a successful CEO is that sometimes he doesn’t know anymore where he comes from,” Biver said. “This keeps my...
