Item #12?…The P-38 Can Opener. Would you believe I still have mine from when I served ‘back in the day’?

Have a P-38 tucked into my wallet for many years. Never know when you’ll have to open a can when nothing else is available. Will never go hungry as long as I have my wallet and a can of food.

Got one hangin’ on my key-chain. Learned to use it on C-rats when I was about 8 and the Army was beginning the transition to MREs. Dad’s CO let it be known, through the NCO grapevine, that the Massive store of C-rats was gonna be destroyed and no one was gonna be counting them. Dad grabbed several cases. I have tried the spaghetti, peaches, crackers, bread, peanut butter, jelly, “beef stew” and other tasty things. Nothing gets your attention like the oil on top of a can of 25yr old peanut butter…

Dad was an equal opportunity smoker. He didn’t care What came in his ration pack, if it burned he’d smoke it.

Any of you Navy folks should get a giggle out of this: Have a buddy who was Navy in the late ’70s (post-Nam) and while he was on a float he got ordered to inventory the life boat kits. He found cartons of Viceroys that were from the late ’50s. He replaced one and hung onto the old one, smoked them on a dare and was sick for 3 days.

Shoot, we had a much better kit back in the day …. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPwW7RaPO_g

  5. aardvark says:

You could get all this and carry it — but would you know what to do with it under pressure?

    • TX Soldier254 says:

Oh yes Aard, through training, training and then alittle bit more training to the point of it becoming 2nd nature over any pressure.

    • Cernunnos81 says:

Ma’am, I am not even, technically, trained in an official capacity and I can think of multiple uses for everything on that list. In my case it is a combination of being a “country boy”, a “survivalist” and 2/3 nuts. I have 10 of those e-blankets in a nice bag of “stuff” and 200′ of para-cord, a fire starter, arm powered chain saw… my kit is a bit more “elaborate”. Those e-blankets make great insulation/waterproofing in the back of a lean-to reflects the heat of your fire down onto your sleeping area. put another under your sleeping area, reflects your body heat back up to you.
